well yester day we got out the wd45 and it sounds like its missing. i think a valve might be stuck. iva already checked the plugs and points and its not them. its also putting out some black smoke every once and awhile. we are getting a new head gasket today and cheking the valves. any help on knowing what else could be wrong would be nice thanks.

Sounds like it's running rich and fouling the plugs, I'd check the float in the carb for leaks first.
Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.

Don't hesitate to change the spark plugs.  I worked on my 45 one time until I didn't know what else to do.  I had really good compression and made sure all the plugs were firing by looking at the electrode in dim light.  I had changed the points and condenser.  However the plugs weren't firing under pressure - when installed.  Finally a mechanic friend dropped by and after checking for just a couple of minutes he told me he thought I needed to replace the spark plugs which I did.  That fixed the problem.

well i took apart the carb and sure enough thefloat had gas in it.so we went to our parts guy and we got a new float, carb gasket set, head gasket set (manifold gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and a head gasket). then when i got home i was going to do the work on the carb. and well thats were something happened. a piece of the carb broke..  :[
but luckely i can just take one off of am old carb... so back to the parts guy.....

im hoping that all the problem was is the float.. also the engine is like 100% original to.

If you want to keep your carb clean, especially during the off season, buy a can of Johnson/Evinrude Engine Tuner, that stuff breaks down carbon deposits like no other, i fill my carb bowl with it in the fall after i'm done using my toys, then, in the spring, just open the drain screw and drop the bowl to see for yourself, believe me, there is no other way i would go! use every 200 hrs or so, i use it every 300 hrs on the boat, and every time in the truck, boat, tractor, motorcycle, and lawnmower when I deploy.

Get a compression gauge and screw it into the spark plug holes.
My gauge was $40.

With ALL the spark plugs removed and the throttle wide open, crank over with the starter and a well charged battery and get a good reading from each cylinder using a compression tester. You may want to use a battery charger to keep cranking consistent.

you can get a tester from most any automotive parts store that sells tools. when you do the test the guage should jump up to around a hundred. it wont at first it will go something like 50 psi 80 psi then to 100 psi and should stay there. if it leaks down you have a problem. if you crank it over for a few revolutions and nothing happens then all of a sudden the needle jumps you have a sticking valve. also you may not have a 100 psi which is not to big of deal as long as all the cylinders are around the same pressure. if you have low compression you can try putting some oil in the cylinder and see if that brings up the compression. if it does you have poor rings.

Some testers have tapered rubber nose which you just force tight against the plug hole. Some have a threaded fitting that screws in the plug hole. All should have a release button of some sort to dump the reading.

You might also have an intake gasket out.  I have seen similar results when a manifold was warped on one of our Wds. While its running, feel around the intakes and feel for air leaks. You can also make a mess by using a squirt can of oil around them. If the gaskets are leaking, it will even out for a second, then suck the oil in and smoke.
