Seems someone tried to change over to 12v.  There is NONE of the wiring connected.  It has an alternator hanging with just the single bolt in the bottom holding it in place.  The battery was connected with - ground and + going to the starter.  NOTHING else is hooked up.  I wonder if they tried to do something and blew the alternator?  It has a magneto and the push/pull switch for starting.  Can I change all of the switches out and install so the kill switch pushes in instead?  There are no headlights and the rear (original) is shot I think.  Where can I get a wiring diagram to fix all of this?  Thanks for ANY help guys... Ted

If the alternator is a Delco 10SI style( 2 pin connector + bat stud), it's probably to big to mount and spin without belt hitting something ? The newer CS series are smaller (have 4 pin oval connector) and fit better ( have one on my D-14) .
There's a site run by 'Duey' that's have the wiring info for you,be a good place to start.
The good news is , since you're wiring 100% of it, you'll KNOW what the wires are for ! Bad news, if it doesn't work, you have to blame yourself !!

Thanks Jay, it looks to be a 2 connector, but it looks awful small.  It is smaller than the one on my 45.  Doesn't look like it'll hit anything though.  I'll find out I guess.
Thanks John, I can put this to use!
Thanks Bill, I'll do that!!

I think originally the start switch was mechanically driven on the starter, no solenoid.

For the magneto ignition, any normally open pushbutton will stop the engine but a two position switch, either toggle or push pull gives better safety. The spring loaded pushbutton will sure stop the engine but should the engine be cranked for some reason it could easily start, whether it was a load pushing the tractor down hill in gear or a kid playing with the crank. Whatever the choice, it needs to be open to run, closed to stop because it shorts out the points in the magneto which prevents ignition.

I've read on this forum that a C with a magneto on 12 volts sometimes starts poorly because it gets spun too fast for the magneto impulse to work, but not fast enough for good ignition.

Most alternators are fried instantly if connected to a positive ground battery. Its rare but they could be made for negative ground, but since about 1960 SAE standards have demanded negative ground though it took some makers a decade or more to comply.
