Looking at a couple of 7030/7040 tractors to use in hay operation. Are there anything in perticular to look for on these models. I have never owned an A/C before and want to make sure I give a good look. On interesting thing I find...hours meter often give out of these tractors...more than half of what I have looked at among 8 tracors have broken hour meters. Anyway...also curious about the power directors...good thing on these or a problem. Thanks in advance. Nice site as well.

I have had 4 7000 series tractors and not one had an hour meter get over 1000 hours. Ive had tach trouble too. The 426 is a well designed engine and I havent had any major trouble with one. The power director I would say personally will take more use and abuse than a powershift, but you want to make sure the oil is in good shape. We rake with a 7050 and we were baling with a 7060. Very solid tractors as far as im concerned, and not overpriced.

downtownjr.. my hour meter always worked on our 7040. The only thing that ever went wrong in the 27 yrs i owned my 7040 .with a power director ..was the engine .. MY dad was using it in on a forage blower in 2000 an the engine blew a hole thru the block .. anyways ..got a used 7080 engine for it that worked great ..Quiet cab ...

I agree the hourmeters on these tractors are not the greatest but I have a 7060 that has over 10,000 hrs and is still working.

From my experience and judging from some recent posts here, make sure the transmission will shift in and out of all gears smoothly while the engine is running. Before the engine went on my 7045 PD, I had made all the adjustments I could think of and get to easily and if I really held the clutch down to the floor, I could shift it without grinding, but my father couldnt shift it without killing the engine first.

I have had good luck with a 7040PS I got a couple years ago. Funny that my hour meter works but the tach. doesn't. I use mine for round baling and snow pushing. Seems way more than necessary for the round baler but about right for the snow we get. How much does one have to pay for a good 7040? Our ol' friend MACK always said to put new bearings into the engine at 5000 hours....

We have found that most of the guys that use a 70 series like the power shift in the hay work and p.d. for field work and we usually get a tractor that shows arond 1400 to 3000 hours on them the ones that show 1000 most of the time have had their alternators change with one that didn't work for a tac . Make sure that the cables all work free and that the hyd.valae linkage isn't worn or you think theres trouble with the pump if you have any questions feel free to call me 1 618 282 2477 ussually best around 12:00 while I'm eating lunch Niel

I take that back I have blown a hole through a piston twice, but it wasnt the tractors fault probably. I have the pump turned up 20% so its actually pushin 190. So if you find one it would probably be best if the pump wasnt turned up. Seems like it causes premature failure. |

Are tach on are 7080 says 7,968 hrs. It's been apart for a clutch around 6,000 hrs. The tach quit working about 7 years ago, still runs strong, it was on the dyno after the new clutch install, had the pump turned up a little, M&W dyno said 235 H.P. It's a good tractor.

I highly recommend performing an oil anaylsis on the motor and rear ends before buying any tractors. This can tell you a lot about the machine your about to buy and can give you a heads up on your existing equipment before you break down in the field.

Thanks guys...looking at a few other 7030...but they seem to leak a lot of fluid...one has a recent overhaul. Really like the prices...seems great for hay. Thanks again...I think I will be an allis owner soon.

Well I made the buy today...now own an 1973 Allis 7030....my first Allis. Bought it at an auction. One leak of the transmission fluid underneath. Probably put a new gasket in. Figure I will drop all the fluid and replace filters/screen etc and start from a known point. Anyway thanks for the assist and I am sure I will be on asking questions as I go. Open to any other thoughts as I work it over this winter. TIA.

My dad did alot of hay work with his 7040 without any trouble, but the hour meter never worked very long. When he started running a stack-hand, he put a rotary screen on the front to keep the radiator clear. Good luck, I don't think you can find a better tractor for the money than a 7000 series.
