Looking for advice on gasket installation for a D17 engine. I plan on changing most all the gaskets on it. Do i use sealer on all of them or just some?  If so what sealer  works best? I will be pulling the engine out and put it on an engine stand to do this I want to do it right.

Thanks

I use HI TACK  sealer from Fel -Pro I believe , its in a can has a brush and works great , doesnt set up real fast and easy to work with but does a great job of sealing ; dont use nothing on the head gasket unless the instructions say so

The best tip I know of is to make sure the mating surfaces are clean.
I have used a product called "indian head" that is a thin gasket sealer. Don't use this on something like a valve cover gasket that you may have to remove again though. That stuff sticks like glue and is very hard to remove once it sets up.
I have used copper coat on head gaskets before. I don't know if it helps or not but everything I used it on didn't leak.

Indian Head Gasket Shellac. Comes in bottle with a cotton ball attached to the lid for application. I use the same stuff, especially on cork gaskets. I dont use silicone, silicone wasnt around when these tractors were built.

Try NAPA. I'm pretty sure I've seen it there.

Yup, my local carquest and autovalue stores carry it in stock. Probably for me, I dont think anyone else uses it. I first came across it when restoring my JD 720 Diesel. The head gasket on those is stamped steel, and the FSM tells you to coat both sides with gasket shellac before assembly. This fills minor pitting that the steel gasket would seal on.

I will glue the valve cover gasket to the valve cover, let dry and that holds it in place when you put on the valve cover. If you have to readjust the valves when hot or after a few hours of operation then I will glue the bottem of the gasket to the head after the surfaces are well cleaned. If at a latter point in time if the valve cover has to be romoved I  put on a new gasket if nessary.

On tin head gaskets as on the old flatheads I use copper coat, some guys used to spray paint the head and block seal areas with aluminized paint and did fairly well with that.  For general purpose I use either HiTack or Indian Head as they seem to do the best.  I do avoid silicone sealants, they tend to be excessive and most are not impervious to oils or the chemicals added to oils, only GM dealer supplied black silicone does well in this category but it flashes off in less than 5 minutes working time so you have to be really quick and it has to be really clean and dry.
