    Posted: 18 Feb 2011 at 10:56pm
Hello Folks,

I am wondering if I could convert my trip loader into a fully hydraulic loader with an independent hydraulic system running off of the belt pully. I saw a WD-45 on craigslist that a fella claimed he did this by adapting a hydraulic pump off of the belt pully. He used an auxilliary hydraulic tank and a two-way spool valve. He used a skidloader bucket. It looked like a pretty slick set up.

I really want a way to be able to operate the loader and the 3 point independently. I have got some advice in the past about using a valve in the hydraulic line but was cautioned that it was pretty darn dangerous.

What do you think? Is there a better way?

Also, I was thinking of changing my front wheels to car wheels to help with the weight.

Thanks,
David

I put a front mounted hyd. pump on my D-17 to make my loader fully hyd. It works great and you can use the foot clutch instead of the hand clutch.

I think I still have a pump setup  like you are talking about. Mine worked good.  MACK

I run my loader with a valve. Works good just make sure you get a valve that will handle the pressure. I have it mounted on the fender. A full hydraulic loader would be much nicer but the valve is less work to set up.
Everything is impossible until someone does it! WD45-trip loader 1947 c w/woods belly mower, 1939 B, #3 sickle mower 1944 B, 2 1948 G's. Misc other equipment that my wife calls JUNK!

You will have to watch for clearance between the belt pulley location and the loader cylinders. On the WD45 you can not use the WD9 loader without removing the belt pulley because of the interference with the lift cylinder. Other loaders may have geometry that will let it work, but it is an area that needs attention.

I echo Dan's recommendations. Did a front pump inst. on my B for the loader. Works great! The WDs are even better suited to the mounting of a front pump but you'd still need some machining capabilities or friendly nearby machine shop.

I had that same intention and got a v-belt pulley, I think it was for a C and was supposed to be used for a corn picker. Correct me if I'm wrong. I think it's a 5/8 belt groove. I haven't done the loader setup yet, but I am still partial to the crank pulley live hydraulics. Economic issues gives me more time to think about it and not do anything yet.
You will have to match the pulley speed to the pump requirements to make it effective.

I know there is a lot on this issue that I don't understand, but why can't you use the hydraulic system a WD or a 45 have and incorporate a spool valve? Is it because of pressure being too high? or not enough oil volune? Both?

I added a 3 way valve to my 45. Hydraulic pressure goes to the valve and is diverted to 1. the loader, 2 the remote hook up, 3 the lift arms. When the loader is about 3 ' off the ground I simply flip the valve to the back position and it holds the loader allowing use of the lift arms and rear blade. The only problem I could see with this set-up, is if I had a SC wheel disc. I would have to make the remote work with the lift arms, which would mean disconnecting 1 hose and attaching it to the same port as the lift arms.
A 2 way diverter valve would work fine if you connect the remote and lift arms to the same port.
If you want a hyd bucket you need to add valves and cylinders and it would be ideal to have a front mounted pump to run the loader. If you want to power the secondary pump with a belt, do it from the front of the engine like the power steering set-ups are done.

Just remember if you run the pump off of the belt pulley you still will not have live hydraulics.  Step on the foot clutch and everything stops.

What everyone is saying is true.  But remember if you use a front pump or one off belt pulley, this is a low pressure, hi volume pump.  You will need to change lift cylinders to low pressure cylinders or the lift rate will be slow. - AL

You can get a pump that puts out 3000+ pounds and most of the valves have an adjustable pressure relief valve capable of 3000 lbs. That should work with the Allis cylinders. Bob

Al, if you use a low pressure high volume pump the lift rate on Freeman cylinders would be way too fast and they wouldn't lift much of anything. Extending a regular 2 way cylinder with the Allis high pressure system would be slow. If a guy wants to make the bucket dump hydraulically, you just about have to have 2 way cylinders so changing out the lift cylinders would be a minor detail and would add usefulness to the loader having down-pressure.

The best system going is still the distributor driven pump if you can find one. I see no real reason to spend the time with a belt pulley driven system which doesn't give you live hydraulics.

The distributor driven pump will wear the keyway out on gov. gear causing timeing to run back and forth and finely cut the key off.
I have mounted a pump in front  of crank pulley. Not much room but enough.
No need for a different oil supply, just add a tank under the frame plumed into drain hole of hyd system and return oil back into the added tank from added valve.  MACK

How long would this take? There are thousands of M Farmalls out there with the live pump in front of the distributor.

The WC/WD distributor pump setups were in service for a long time and I'm sure they will outlast the use most of us would ever give one of these old tractors. The bigger problem is finding one. There were a lot more units made for the Farmall that the Ac's. I've never seen one on eBay or for sale at a show/swap meet. I do know where there are a few units :).

Sorry. Just to clarify. I would like pictures of the belt pully set up.

Thank you,
