Working on a Simplicity 12.5 LTH lawn tractor with the Briggs 12.5 hp  engine.  Crank seal has been leaking the last couple of years making a mess out of the belts and electric clutch.  I am wondering about the pan removal if I will have any surprises when I pull it off such as the oil pump or something else to be careful with.  I have no manual to work with.  It is an OHV twin cylinder.  Last year I used some of the Bars engine oil stop leak with limited success, so I decided to tear it down today to see what's up.  Definetly looks to be the crank seal.  Any thoughts or experiences appreciated.  Thanks

Scott..I have gone directly to the Briggs and Stratton web page and down loaded the whole manual on my B&S that is 27 years old...you should find yours there. It's free but other sites will try to sell you one. You'll need the model numbers, etc.

I may have that engine in barn that's gone bad. I'm about to junk, it has nice starter, carb, etc on it, if interested, give me your engine number to verify and I would make a good deal to you for some spare parts you may want.

John's right on the money( free !).
One reason I like B&S is the free manual service. Nevere found any Tecumseh's on the web...sigh.
You'll need the model, type, code numbers. Then fumble around their site and fill in the blanks.Once I download and save, I also save a copy but called B&S125VS.pdf,easier to remember when looking for it on my pc.
BTW the first 6 digits of the 'code' is the yr-mt-dy that engine was built.Handy to know when buying old riders of 'unknown' age. If the engine looks original, rider was built same time or maybe few months(1-5) later.

You can also get the manuals for the entire tractor and engine at Simplicity.

For the link to the manuals.  Download them and burn them to a CD and/or print them out.  I did both, because I plan on moving my old PC to the shop when I get a new one!

Before you go tearing it apart to change the crank seal, make sure that the crankcase breather isn't fouled or otherwise obstructed.  If it is, you'll have a leak simply from crankcase pressure having no escape path.  Clean out the breather, and it may just stop leaking.

Pulling engine and dropping pan will make it easy to change the seal, but make sure seal surface on crankshaft hasn't been damaged, and also make sure shaft hasn't been bent.  Not likely, but always possible.

Finally... if the lower-end bearing or shaft area has been worn... like from a belt-tension problem, the seal may not be making proper contact from shaft deflection... hence, a new seal won't solve the problem, or if it does, not for very long.
