I have a 1997 Ford Windstar van with 297,000 miles on it. The second trans just died. The body is starting to show rust under the sides & wheels. The engine is unbelievably good. Since 39,000 miles I have serviced it with napa 10w30 oil all along at 5,000 mile intervals. it never has used any oil between changes. It is mostly original. I changed the plugs & plug wires at 165,000, the oil pan gasket at 210,000, & a few serpentine belts - that is all. I asked about the timing chain/belt, but was told if its running good, don't mess with it. My wife wants me to scrap the whole thing. My quesiton is; which Allis tractor (WC,WD,WD45,D12,D14,D15,D17) would allow for an engine swap with this Ford V6 3.0L engine? Would the computer controlled components be a nightmare on an older tractor? Or - and I hate to say it - is my wife right? What would you do?

I don't know about your area, but around here Windstars are up for two nasty recalls involving the front subframe and the rear axle for cracking. By the sounds of things there are no repairs for affected vehicles and you might get put up in a rental till Ford figures it out. Its a real mess. Might want to look into that before you go about cutting it up like that.

After cash for clunkers engines seem to have appreciated in price. Probably scrap the rest tho if something like the above post doesn't pan out.

I'd have to say that by the time one adapted in and figured out flywheel and clutch, and then got it to run, a regular Allis 201-226 engine would be a dream. The ford is going to need to run pretty fast to do any work in comparison to what the transmission and gearing was designed for in a tractor.
good thing scrap is high and craigslist is free. I bet your wife would be happy with some extra v-day gift or outings.

They have the axle recall fix figured out. What happened to the trans? It just quit moving? Those are known for breaking pump drive shafts which is an easy repair. Adapting the motor to a tractor? Not so easy.

Trying to figure out the computer and all associated wiring would be a nightmare. Definitely not worth the bother! There are still some good AC engines out there that will bolt right up.

As one who tries to keep 'all the good stuff for a rainy day', I have to say, scrap it !
Be sure to save your half of the money ( you will give wifey her fair share !lol) for a future project.
