On paper these tractors looked to perform pretty good, how come they never really caught on?
Would the motor fit into a D10/12?

Wasn't the diesel a fair bit less powerful than the gas version by the time the series II rolled out, so if it had any kind of premium in price, I would say it would not have appeared too attractive to many. I believe someone explained it along those lines a while back, but I could be wrong.

A local JD dealer had a D15 diesel in there used lot a couple/three years ago. Looked to be a nice tractor @ $5,500 (if I am remembering correctly). I was not interested at the time, might be today.

For a long time from post ww2 to maybe 1995ish time farmers have bought typically the second largest tractor in the lineup. For an established grain farmer, why buy a new tractor that cant do more than your old one? They have to have some new feature and for a long time it was more power, now it electronics and guidance.
Most of those years the D17 was the second in the line up and hence the largest seller. Go through the years and you will find similar results. If you were an established grain farmer you already had an older tractor that would be compareable in power to a D15 so why pay the money to get a newer smaller tractor, extra for diesel as well, when you can put that money into buying the biggest tractor you can afford.
You get into specialty crops and the D15 was to big. So it was really a bastard in size for the time, for what the time.

I love my series 1 D15D. It's a great tractor. I wish they had of cought on that way used parts would be easier to get.

From 57 to 63 it was the second. In 63 when the D21 came out then yes it was 3rd but at this time you saw the popularity of the D17 was waning. I would say by 65 or 66 probably the 190 was the most popular? The later D17s series iv were made in much fewer numbers. Allis didn't roll out whole series of tractors together but introduced them in increments.

Diesel was a few less horses, maybe two or three, probably not a big deal for what they were going to be used for. Now they are just a sweet little show tractor. Fred

May 1968 Price book. D-15 II gas base price $4231.00 48.9 PTO HP.
D-15 II diesel base price $4834.00 38.4 PTo Hp.
No mystery why A-C didn't sell very many.
If the diesel had a little turbo and been 2/3 of a D-19 instead of 2/3 of a D-17, the diesel would have had 48 hp. Another project!!!

Seems to me more were sold in the southern states than the Midwest. Of the three I have the Series I came from GA, Series II from TN and the Series II HC from AL.
