    Posted: 02 Dec 2010 at 7:03pm
Good day...my father is wrapping up a restoration of an AC  IB. We have everything to complete the job...except the battery box. The battery frame that came on the tractor was a homemade, angle iron frame that was bolted to the bumper channel. I have surfed the web for an after market box; however, I have found nothing manufactured specifically for the IB. After more research, I note that some IBs have the battery box mounted on the left fender, some are under the steering column, and some are not visible at all. Any ideas on why some boxes are mounted on the fender? Does anyone have a lead on a manufacturer who carries the battery box for the IB? Thanks so much.

I have seen a battery box in a catalog. I just can't remember which one. Ours had one on the left frame rail just forward of the Fender. It was too rusted away to tell if it was original. We made our own replacement. The ones I've seen since all had their battery box on the left fender. I have never seen one under the steering. Good luck

My understanding on the IB when I was restoring mine was that the WC Battery box was the box used on the IB. As far as the location was concerned, from what info I gathered from the Orange family here, and some literature & pics, the normal spot for the Battery box was the left fender towards the front of the machine. Now, because the IB was used in many, many applications, depending on what type equipment was mounted on and under that little bugger, is usually where the Battery box found a new home other than the fender. My IB from what I was told by the gentleman I bought it from (who knows the originally owner personally and has seen the machine since new) had a sickle bar mower under it, and the Battery box on my machine was mounted near and in front of the right rear tire. When I bought the machine, the second owner told me he moved it to the left top frame rail which you could see the hoaky angle iron sorta' box he built to hold the Battery. I moved the box back to where he told me it was. I'm just going by what he told me on my machine, but as I mentioned, my understanding was it was located in different area's on the Tractor depending on who and what it was built for.. HTH

Thanks for the information...WC box? Interesting. We do not plan to attach any implements to the IB...maybe the bumper on the right side is the best bet. Plus, my dad and I are "big boys"; I am concerned the battery box mounted on the left fender wound get in the way of clutching the tractor. Thanks again. I appreciate the info. Happy Holidays!

Thank you all for the information. Dad has a styled WC part tractor...the battery box was still attached and serviceable. Hope to post some photos within the next few months. Happy Holidays to all!

Fred Wilke made battery boxes some time ago.  He has the capability to make what you want.  Look under Wilke Engineering, Hanover, PA.
If you contact him ask if you can visit his outstanding collection.  He has a WC - two an unstyled and a styled from 1938 - from every year including a Waukesha WC.  One of his WC's is one my father sold his father.
Good Luck!

Parts books show 3 different part numbers for IB Battery Box Assemblies. Also shows 2 different part numbers for IB Battery Box Support Brackets. A LH and a RH. I presume a Left and Right. Drawing shows them used together under the box. What they bolt to is not shown

I really like the looks of that IH box! It looks more Industrial, like the IB. I placed Jan's IB battery box down on the frame rather than up on the fender. On the fender looks goofy to me and causes a blind spot. If there were an attachment that required getting it up out of the way that would be different. When Drott fitted a mower to our #1 IB they hung the battery box and a heavy tool box on the left frame rail and the mower on the right side, that worked real well.

Here's a shot of my IB's Battery Box. According to the previous owner he moved it from here and mounted it up on the frame rail on the left side in front of the L/F fender. I moved it back to where it was. The hour meter isn't OEM, I installed that to keep an eyeball out on the engine hours....    Steve@B&B
