I couldnt find the timing mark on my C so i took off the valve cover and set it to what i think is the intake valve. is the first or second valve the intake on cylinder #1? and if i got it set to the exhaust valve the mag would be 180 off? i pulled it around the yard and it wanted to crank but never did. i got a new coil and fire to the plugs and gas in the carb so i think it has to be timing. any help would be appreciated thanks

The 2nd valve is the intake. Follow your manifold, 1 ex, 2&3 in, 4&5,ex, 6&7 in, 8 ex.

Take number 1 plug out and turn the engine over till you feel compression on the plug hole using your finger as a sensor. Now get a piece of wire or whatever to feel the piston. Crank until you feel it stop coming up. That should put you where yo need fire on number 1.

Charlie: That is the way I do it, the only difference is , when I feel the piston stop coming up, I turn it just a little more to get the crank throw ready to start the down position, that way it can't jump back and get you.

Cub, I would set it the way they say. I had a hard time finding the marks on my C too. They were there, just very dirty. I actually wrapped a piece of fine sandpaper over the end of a small strip of wood, and then had my son spin the starter a few times. That really helps clean things up. There will be two marks. One has a T stamped next to the line. The other has an F stamped next to it. I set mine with the fire mark. I also dabbed a little white paint in there on the mark and then wiped off the excess. Now the mark is easy to find. Good luck, and let us know when you get her going.

Dave, I do it to get it running then adjust by ear. I have never had a timing light on a tractor. Does the B set screw on the front pulley point down like the WC"s when it is on TDC?

On the B, C, CA, RC the set screw on the front pulley points straight up when number one and four are at TDC.  Like others wrote, use the hand crank with the number one spark plug out and your finger in the plug hole, turn the engine slowly until you feel air being pushed out through the plug hole.  This means the piston is on it's way up on compression stroke.  Then look at the set-screw on the front pulley and when it is straight up then the piston is at the top.  The slot that drives the mag will be horizontal if the governor gear is in correct.  Look at the rotor in the mag and turn the mag backward until the rotor points just beyond the upper left contact which is for cylinder number one.  Then install the mag and you should be good to get it going.
