their can only be about three or four threads cant tell what to tap with having sixty five yaers of paint and rust ant dirt pluging the holes

If it's a straight 1/4" thread it's either 20 TPI for coarse or 28 TPI for fine. If it's 1/4 pipe thread it's tapered and, if I remember right, 14 or 16 TPI(?)

Would like to answer your question with certainty, but I can’t tell for certain. I have 2 sets of them, one set has no holes, the other set is so rusty, crusty and eroded that its hard to tell. It looks more like 1/4-20, but seems like they would have made it fine thread instead since the holes are so shallow. I did get a 1/4-20 bolt to kinda sorta start in the best one of the threaded set of caps… I ‘think’ they’re coarse thread. Definitely not 1/4 pipe, the holes are too small even for 1/8 pipe…
