Hello I live in northern MI where ice storm just hit. We are trying to get clean up going and ran into a problem. I did a search and found nothing. So I am iso information on a older AC 840 wheeled loader. Should be basic information. I have the operator , service and parts manuals but cant figure this out. The pics in my manual are not clear. I was trying to check the trans fluid level. The trans pan has two pipe plugs on the front. One high and one low. My understanding was to pull the top plug to check fluid level. Well that resulted in about 2-3 gallons of ATF coming out all at once. 1) Is this actually how to check the level? Manual states open valves ??? I have no idea what that means. but pic has a caption saying plug?
2) Manual says Dextron fluid? Thanks for any help

I am not familiar with your loader, but it was very common to not have dip stick until the 1960's.
I have mid 1950's AC crawler that you pull a plug on, the next size larger crawler built at the same time has a dip stick.
I wonder if they meant a bolt like plug that has been drilled so turn it out just several turns and it can drip out just enough to say it has fluid. You never turn them so the threads are all the way out of body. John Deere used that kind of thing on the 2 cylinder Jonny Poppers. I know very poor description. Hopefully jog someone's memory and they will have a name other than valve.

John, I've had an 840 loader for 30 years. Yes the oil level should be to the top check plug. If yours was overfull it's possible either the steering or loader hydraulic pump is leaking hydraulic oil into the transmission, thru the front seal. I had this years ago, putting a new seal on the steering pump solved the problem. It's the same seal as a 190 tractor. Be carefull when you slide the pump out not to drop the adapter drive sleeve into the tranny. Hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity is the transmission oil to be checked hot or cold and engine running or stopped?

It was cold not up to temp. I know should have been running.
What type of fluid are you using? Manual says Dextron atf

I know the manual says Dexron ATF, but I've been using a good hydraulic oil. Check with engine idling.
