Looking like 2024 is following 2023 here in my part of the state of Va. Nice spring rains with a really good 1st cutting of hay. We dodged some weather on 2 different occasions and thought we had been so lucky so far. Last rain was in late May and now we are burning up. Same thing happened last year which was a disaster for our hay crops. Started feeding cattle in late June. Ended up feeding hay that we had planned to sell and ended up having to buy hay in January and March of this year. We have never had to buy hay before and I’m afraid the pattern has returned again. We received .40” this evening which was a blessing but we need so much more. Praying it turns around here. Supposed to be hot and dry the next 10 days. At least I haven’t had to mow my yard in 2 weeks.

Calling for rain daily but slim chances. Have seen several showers pass by but none dropped here. Mowing for hay out of spite.
Heat will also be hitting low 90s |

We're dry on this side of the mountain too, didn't get but a sprinkle last night.Hay is turning out pretty good though and I have about 50 acres of pasture that hasn't had cows on it since since last Fall so glad I have cut back some only about 40 head now and the goats.

The .40” we got yesterday came from Ohio route according to the radar I was watching. I went ahead and mowed my yard because my wife said it looked shabby and was embarrassing her. What a dusty adventure that was, blew the mower off with the blower for another cloud of dust. It was like we didn’t receive the .40”. Won’t be a second cutting if we don’t get some relief soon. Supposed to be in the 90’s with no rain in the near future. Will be helping my buddy mow the last of his 1st cutting Monday . He has square baled almost 18,000 on 1st cutting. The Bale Baron has really been busy and has been trouble free. The next 45 acres will all be round bales

Rain, Rain, Rain! Total opposite of 2023 in central Wisconsin, 8 1/2” in May. Lots of unplanted fields and pretty tough to make hay with rain chances every other day (at least). Managed to make some on Friday, 693 small squares off of 6 acres, best hay I’ve ever had but looks like another week before I’ll be able to cut again. I feel for you guys not getting any rain, we had that problem last year and I’m not about to complain about too much rain this year.

Seems every rain chance is a bust around here, glad I pulled back the population on the dryland corn to 9000 for the last half of the field, the lower end was planted at 12,000,but it can get a little runoff from the neighbor.
As you can tell by that population we are used to dry here, but spring is normally our wettest season, and just havent been getting what we should. |

I have to agree with Travis2766 here in western WI, we've had rain every other day. I scored 6.38 on my rain gauge for the last 36 hours. I am thankful, as you should never gripe about too much rain.

I am thankful, as you should never gripe about too much rain. [/QUOTE] I'll bet the people in Spencer Ia. would argue with that Ted! Just got back from the Red Power round up and that is a serious mess. Was really lucky to get out! Drove through water in four or five different places.

Still no rain here in my part of VA. Yard is brown, river is down 3 ft, creek is really low. Getting to the point we’re we will need to start feeding new hay. Pasture is about gone.

Yea eastern part of VA here, Extremely dry here as well. Might have to start supplementing a little bit of hay here too. Neighbor has been pumping water on his beans but he has already pumped his pond dry. Only good thing about this lack of rain is that I have not had to cut my yard in almost a month.

Last summer all it did was rain here. The bugs were outta' control along with the Mosquitos that would carry you away! I went through more fuel mowin' the lawn than any other year. This year, so far its been hot, but we've had a few showers and Thunderstorms roll through in the evening hours. Couldn't even attend a car show last summer. It sucked! Steve@B&B

We have been watching our orchard fields go backwards with no rain. 2nd cut was looking good for the first few weeks, good undergrowth but with no rain we have been watching our fields starting to turn brown and shrinking. So we decided to cut them Monday. You know it’s dry when you mow it Monday morning around 10 am and bale the next afternoon at 4 pm. Pretty hay but only a 1/4th of what we normally get off of them. We got 2tenths of rain last evening, as usual we missed out on the 1” of rain 30 miles away. Was supposed to be a widespread storm. Just can’t catch a break. Hopefully our other fields will recover when we get some good rain as they are 2 weeks behind when we cut the orchard grass originally. Not selling any more of our hay until we fill the barn. Not making the same mistake as I did last year and ended up having to buy hay.
