w/Tecumseh HM80
picked it up for $25.00. New starter rope, qt of 30w motor oil, spray can of carburetor cleaner, gallon of gasoline, fired it up.
Just need to fine tune the rpm’s, and tweek the governer.
My simple voltage test shows 125 volts with a relatively light load(a household box fan and a 40 amp battery charger hooked up to the Suburban).
On a moderate heavy load(stand-up 110v air compressor w/1.75hp motor) the rpm’s on the Tecumseh noticeably drop, and voltage drops to 105-100 volts. So evidently the governer is a tad weak.
Will do another oil change, this time will pass on the generic, and splurge for name brand motor oil.
Hunt down some non-ethanol gasoline, get some more gas cans, and Sta-Bile.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

aboaut 800 WATTS per HP... So you compresor is pulling 1500 watts on a 4000 watt generator... SHOULD be able to maintain a set RPM with that load... YEP.. governor needs a little adjusted.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Them Tec motors are JUNK!! Governors never worked from the factory! Got a dozen of them here on tillers/water pumps/mowers/generators and not 1 out of the lot has a decent working governor on it! Its a TECH. thing I guess!

I’ve heard that criticism about Tecumseh engines, for a long time. This is first one I’ve personally had with this issue. Of the ones, over the decades I have had, the general knock was they were hard starting when the engine was warm. Had a walk behind Craftsman lawn mower, and an old(1960’s) walk behind Arien’s snowblower. That old snowblower would fire right off on the second pull, maybe the third at most, when stone cold(remember, used in snow lol) so I would never shut it off until put back in the garage.
In high school ‘small engines’ class, I was the only one that had a non-B&S engine. So I have always been partial to Tecumseh engines. Unfortunately, they strayed away from cast iron cylinders, so the later ones I avoid. B&S has by far the lion’s share of the market, and of the 5 small engines I have, 4 are B&S.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

I have a 10 hp TECH on the Yard Machines snowblower but its 110 volt electric start. Bought it new gov NEVER did work on it then carb which is another junk idea of TECH, never worked right. The TECHS on my tillers all have carb problems too! I tolerate them but DESPISE them!!!! lol!

Back in the 70's I used to build a lot of go karts, and mini bikes and mostly used Tecumseh engines in the application as they would stay together longer than a Briggs&Stratton in that usage. Governors were never left alone and 4500rpm was a reasonable engine speed to optimize for. Had a ball with the Tecumseh two stroke engines too and they would run even higher rpm but when they came apart, it was rather violent.

Had a couple on lawnmowers also and they were good performers for me, but I did maintain them well.
A career built on repairing and improving engineering design deficiencies, shortcomings, and failures over 50 years now.

This generator has a standard 110v 20 amp oulet(with the tab removed between the two ‘hot’ screws, and a lead wired to each), and a 250v 15 amp outlet. I dont have need for 250v 15 amp. If I’m not mistaken that outlet is two 125v ‘hot’ and one neutral that runs thru the ‘ground’ terminal on the outlet? If that’s the case, I’ll make a short conversion cord. Use a 250v plug, 12/4 Romex( maybe 2ft in length), put an outlet box with a 110v 20 amp outlet on it, break the tab between the ‘hot’ leads, wire each hot, and wire the common neutral.

I split the output on one of my big generators like that! Works just fine! I even split a range recep. here in the house since we use lp and the line was just useless otherwise. Now its functional.

YEs you can split, that works... But remember the TOTAL OUTPUT of the generator is 4000 watts.... that is 110v x 20 amps = 2200 watts ... times TWO PLUGS = 4400 watts.... OR you can use the 250v  x 15 amp plug = 3750 watts..... but you can NOT use both at the same time..... just use your two 110v plugs and keep the 250v as a SPARE for future use.. Not much  need to split it now..

The adapter just plugs into the generator and dont do anything to change the internal wiring of the generators so nothing is lost. IF the 220 plug was ever needed which would be never, its still intact, just unplug the adapter. They are not hardwired into the units.
