 Topic: cylinder hone grit

I finally got dads old D-17 gas freed up. The head is off and want to clean up the cylinder that was stuck. What grit of stone are people using to clean these up? I know it will probably use a little oil but dad is 84 and getting out of the hospital and will not get worked very hard at all just plan on using it on a rake. Kind of a surprise for him as its been sitting for the past 5 yrs

YEP... thats what i would do in your case... Could be 240... but the 180 might clean up more of the "damage"..

thank you ive used the rabbit t**d hones before and the work rather well just couldnt remember what the final cross hash marks should be

clean al then rust and crud out first or you will fill the hone up and it will hone the clean spots and not the dirty spots

Do you know anyone near you with a sandblast cabinet ? use it first and only to remove heavy scale, it will save time and the hone.

If it's just 1 cylinder, you might just replace that 1 sleeve with a good used 1. I personally would use a flat stone hone because it will only hone the high spots, not make the low spots lower.
