I have seen numerous posts about the color scheme for my 1960 D17 Series 1 gasoline wide front(s/n 29963). I've seen so many contradictory posts I don't know where to go and my hair is about to catch on fire. And since I don't have any hair that's a trick! Help! Mostly I need to know the color of the wheels, the rims, The steering wheel, the seat, The headlamps, and the grill. I realize the orange is the Persian orange but I'm confused about whether or not the grill has the black outlines or not. Generally I would like the entire scheme explained to me! Thanks in advance!

All lights are black. If your grille has 3 bars going across it, those bars and outline will be black while the mesh is aluminum color. Persian orange 1 on wheel centers and inner front rims with aluminum on the outside. Black steering wheel as well. If your seat is the tin seat with no cushions, it is to be PO #1 as well. Always a nice touch to paint the starter and generator black too.

Thanks for the info! As much as I appreciate "nice touch" ideas like the starter/generator being painted black, I'm really looking for the OEM Factory look. So am I understanding that a 1960 D17 has NO cream color on it, except maybe the name plate?

By the serial number provided, your tractor is what we'd refer to as a Series 2 model. At s/n 24001 and up, your grille screen is the same as a Series 3 and 4 tractor. Not the old "x" pattern screen. So, this changes everything. Grille screen is cream color as are the wheel centers and steering wheel. The orange is Persian Orange NUMBER 2 !!! not the old persian orange number one. Your hoods may have the stamped aluminum ALLIS-CHALMERS plates riveted to the hood instead of decals.

If you are going for the OEM factory paint job look, don't forget to add over spray and runs to your paint job. The whole tractor was painted on the assembly line in under 5 minutes! Yes, all the tractor's were painted, but not very good at all. I have several original D14s and WD45s - they all have plenty of imperfections! As a result, the factory OEM look is nothing to aspire to in my opinion. |

Thanks! My name plate is riveted on the hood. Isn't there supposed to be an oval D17 decal somewhere on each side? My grill is currently what's left of white or cream. I don't have the tractor with me right now and I'm going to try to attach a photo but it seems like the entire front wheels are orange And the rear wheels have orange centers but either white or cream or actually silver rims. I can't tell from the photo. How about the exhaust pipe and the lights?

No oval "D-17" decals on yours. That's for the early models. Yours should have a rectangle "D-17" decal just above the rear hood snap latch.

D14 decal for reference, D17s were similar (except for the aluminum nameplates). Earlier models from 57 to early 59 had oval decals. 59 and up used these ones... |

Here is my D17 back when I redid it. The wheel hubs should be cream.
