    Posted: 07 Feb 2024 at 10:04am
I am assembling my 57 D14 transmission with D15 replacement gears.  The new style 2nd gear on main shaft replaces short spacer due to extended hub.   I am coming up short by at least .040 on main shaft stack so I cannot get the end play down with available snap rings.  I do not see any comments about gear shims on this shaft.  I replaced one roller bearing but left other alone since it looked OK.   I did see a part number change on the long spacer in D15 parts lists but I reused the D14 spacer.   If anyone knows what I may have missed please let me know.  You can see the small 1st gear and rear bearing cup seem slightly forward in this pic.  The other gears are close to each other but seem to clear OK.

You probably didn't measure the old 2nd gear plus the spacer and compare to the new 2nd gear alone ??  new part to narrow is my initial thought. May have to make a spacer/shim.

she is still all apart at this point.  Thanks,  Good advice.    I bent the front dipstick pretty good when I split it.   I did not know the big clutch assembly would catch it on the way out.  I am learning as I go.   A lot more complex than the B and WC.

Yeah that is what I'm thinking too.  If anyone knows a ring shim/ spacer off the shelf that fits over this size shaft it would be helpful.  Ideally, I could look at where each gear aligns and put shims as needed.  I am going to pull the shaft out again and I can make some measurements.  I will try to post what I end up doing.

I ended up buying some stainless steel shims from a supply house in Michigan.  By the time I got the endplay where I wanted it with the existing snap rings I used about .090 total but got the gears pretty well matched up.   Still assembling now but will see how it goes.   It seemed happy when I slapped the shifter back in to test it out.
