Recently purchased a 7040 in need of repair and maintenance.

I will make one post per issue so as not to get reply info tangled.

1st off the PTO will not stop turning. PTO Leaver operates engage/disengage cylinder in the back but does not disengage PTO.
I have not hooked it to drive any PTO equipment yet.

I also do not have a maintenance manual for this tractor yet.

Not really sure I am gonna keep it as it is an extreemly large tractor. Most of my tractors are 190's, 185's and smaller.
Though I needed a bigger tractor, not so sure after getting it home.

they have a hyd brake. Maybe it's not working? In normal circumstances you can not turn pto shaft when engine is running. Sometimes hooking pto up is easier when shaft can be turned. In that case you kill the engine. Now you can turn by hand. Is the valve stroking full length? On my 220 your knee can bump the lever up from "brake" position and it spins but has no power. Might get lucky and be simple....

you might look at the entire pto unit. last summer my 7045 pto would not turn off. I adjusted the cable, but no positive results. Ended up the pto unit was fired. luckily I had a good unit to steal out of another tractor. learned alot. hardest thing about the entire process was the removal of the bad unit. I was trying to save as much of the old unit as possible. if the plates are bad they still available.  if it is other parts, I am not sure where to look for pcs. other than salvage yards. be very careful when prying the unit out of rear housing. Casting can break on unit, if it stubborn about coming out. one other thing I remember at this time is, you must remove plate on the underside of rear end above the drawbar. good luck.

There are two test port plugs on top of the PTO clutch just above the PTO shield. One plug for clutch. The other for brake. If there's 200+ psi at both when you move the lever to ON-OFF and the PTO doesn't stop turning, the clutch must be warped/fried/destroyed. A rare occurence.

On an 8050 that I used to have, that problem developed. Can't remember what inspired me to take off the PTO control valve, but I did. Then I took the valve apart and cleaned it all up. Didn't see anything noticeably wrong but when I put it all back together, the PTO would shut off again. But then after about a month or two it started "not shutting off" again. And it was getting used daily on a feed wagon, so PTO operating properly was pertinent. So I took it apart again, thinking maybe I overlooked something, but still didn't find anything. Put back together and it worked again, but this time for less than a month. So I got a PTO valve from a salvage yard. When I got it, I thought that I had went from bad to worse, because the salvage yard one clearly came off of a burnt up tractor. But I took the salvage yard one apart, gave it a thorough cleaning, put it on the tractor, and it worked flawlessly for quite a few years, until my tractor burned up. Darrel
