So we went through the entire cooling system on our 210. We ran it for a bit without the hood on to check for leaks. So didn't have the voltage regulator hooked up. So tonight we put the hood back on, hooked up regulator and.... no charging at the ammeter gauge. Gauge shows discharge with lights on. I have a fresh rebuilt one to go on tomorrow, but curious if that led to a premature failure ??  Tractor charged great prior to tear down.

I would double check your wiring to make sure they are connected in the correct positions and making good contact. The other possibility is that the VR has lost it’s ground somewhere. I had the same issue and it was a grounding issue. Clean all contact points, if your wiring is correct I would put money on it that it’s a high resistant grounding issue. The VR has at least one foot that is used for ground. You will see a wire strap going to the mounting leg. If you removed sheet metal there could be a loose or missing bolt that completed the ground.

With no field current the alternator then becomes an idler pulley; it is highly unlikely to cause any damage.

Nah. Alt is probably okay. Wouldn't hurt to have it checked though just to make sure it's operating as it should. Most shops can throw it on an 881 machine or similar and run some load tests to check proper output. Only takes a few minutes and most shops won't even charge ya... Well, at least I don't.  LOL!
