Hello All,

My father-in-law is trying to install a rebuilt fuel injection pump but says
it is spring loaded and having trouble getting it to go in.   Is this normal?
He says he replaced one before but doesn't remember having this much
trouble.   He says he will have to leverage it in with some kind of jack to
hold it steady.

Appreciate any input/suggestions.

Any rebuilt pump should have throttle tied wide open until installed. It should slide  in place with no "spring" effect. Sounds like people don't know what they are doing....Leverage and jack should not be included in this conversation.

Sounds like it wasn’t timed when it was pulled so it’s not lining up in the pump. Pump rebuilder should have the pump timed when it came back. If the timing window is removed are the timing marks lined up? As Steve said, force should never be used.

adjustment so the pump will install without any undue "force".

In response about the tool to protect the seals.  I don't think he (father-in-law) is
using anything to re-install it.  If you could point me to the tool you are referring
to, maybe I can persuade him to get one.  Or I might get it for him depending
on the cost.   A link would be most helpful.

Think I know what he is saying…the tang is not entering the groove…make sure to install dot on tang to dot on inside groove.

Look at the pump driveshafts end. It is a flat tang drive. On one end of the tang there is a "DOT". Look inside the pump's driveshaft hole. There is a socket for the driveshaft tang to engage. It too has a DOT on one side. With a clean screwdriver, rotate the pumps socket so the DOT aligns with the shafts DOT and push it together.

I hesitate to post this picture due to size and that it’s my D17 not a 301 engine like he is working on but same principle. The shaft will have 2 umbrella seals on it facing opposite ways in the groove of the shaft that enters the pump. That is where the tool comes in handy, basically acts as a wide set of tweezers that surrounds the seal and holds it flat so the pump can be slid over the shaft so the pump doesn’t flip the seal over. As you slide the pump over the first seal you slide the tool over the next seal to prevent it from tearing. Make sure all these areas are clean and apply diesel fuel on the seals before you start. It acts as a lubricant. The tang on the end of the shaft has to line up inside the pump. Wish I had a picture of the inside of the pump but I don’t. Hope this helps.

I have installed many pumps with the umbrella seals with a small screwdriver and patience with a little lube!! i have borrowed the install tool before but have never found a place to buy them, can anybody shed a little light on where to buy one of the install tools at, I dont know the proper name of it

I guess for seasoned diesel mechanics you don’t need it. I’m a farmer that has pulled a total of 4 pumps and installed them. It has worked for me every time.
