Hello All,

Really new to this... and new to tractors/farming in general. We just bought a place and it has an Allis Chalmers 7080 that came with it. I put in some new batteries and tried to start it. It started and ran for approx 10 seconds, then died. Figured that was normal as it hadn't been started in a few years from what I was told.

The next time I tried to start it, when I let off the button, the starter just kept on cranking. This didn't happen every time or when it just had battery power, so I am thinking it is the push button starter switch. I bought a new switch from a parts store, but I can't seem to figure out how to take out the instrument panel in order to get the new switch installed. I have pulled all the bolts from the side panels, both inside and outside the cab, and the panels are loose, but I can't seem to spread them apart enough to get the side of the instrument panel out. Can anyone help me out with how to get the panel out to replace the switch? I know i have to be missing something easy... I just can't for the life of me figure it out.

Leave the side panels in. Just open the bottom panel in front of your knees and get to the switch from there.

There should be some foam in there too that you have to pull out.

If the tractor has the clutch pedal safety switch in place and working correctly, if you let up on the clutch pedal, even if the push button was stuck, the starter should have stopped. I'll bet it's the starter solenoid that is the problem.

I agree with Dr. Allis. The switch is not the problem. The starter solenoid is sticking. Pretty common if left sitting for a long time.
Your fuel injector pump might also need to be rebuilt if the engine died after 10 minutes.
