Were they 12 volt negative or positive ground? My own fault, robbed the battery for another and don't remember.

You can check to see what it was before you removed the battery. A lot of them were changed from original positive ground to negative ground.
If the wire going from the coil to the distributer is attached (through the switch) to the negative terminal, it is (as original) positive ground. If it has been changed to negative ground, the wire going to the distributer will positive pole of the battery. Changing from positive ground to negative ground is very easy. Just change the wires on the coil (so the opposite polarity is going to the distributer) and "flash" the generator.

It was converted to alternator, I am still confused, the negative from the coil goes to the distributer, does that tell you anything?

Yes. It tells us the ignition system is set up NEG ground General rule of thumb-if you see an alternator its negative ground. Be careful with that rule, because an alternator can be taken apart and made to charge POS ground, however out of the box they are set up to charge NEG ground Generators will charge either without changing any parts, just have to reflash the VR Starters do not care

another quick tip: the positive and negative post on a battery are different sizes.
unless someone changed the cable ends or put cheap bolt on cable ends, the negative is smaller than the positive. Dan
