I don't think anything newer than original dextran was around when that transmission was designed. I know my uncle used 2 or 3 different products over the 30 years he ran his HD 21. I believe the last years he used a Mobil oil product, probably hydraulic/transmission fluid. But cannot say for sure as he has been gone 20 years, as well as the tractor. So no help.

Dexron will work but I would use a transmission oil meeting Allison C-3 , or TO-4 specifications as it is backward compatible. Dexron use is really for very cold weather operations but again, it will work. If you will post the tractor serial number I'll attempt to get you a manual in soft copy.

As with my 7G when had it, UNDER 30F was Recommended to change to Type A ATF, Whale Oil Based and NLA, Dextron was the replacement and NOT advised for the Power Shift Boxes. Use 10W Hydraulic Trans Oil or HYTRANS Fluid.

Not to add to the confusion, but going from memory, the original Dexron had whale oil in it, and Dexron II was the replacement for it that caused transmissions to fail because it couldn't lubricate as well. Dexron III did a lot better than Dexron II and can handle higher temperatures which isn't needed here. There was a lot of backward compatibility to a point. Modern ATF like Dexron III is thin as water and has additives to keep friction material suspended so it's picked up by the filters. It works great for cleaning caked on grease off cars. Makes sense that they would recommend ATF at low temperatures.
