disconnect the rod from the pedal and unscrew it a bit.

Changing the length of the clutch pedal rod on a D17 has no effect. If this is anything other than a series 4, you can adjust the pressure plate fingers thru the small hole in the bellhousing to gain distance between the throwout brg and the fingers (freeplay). A series 4 you cannot and it will require a split to repair. First of all you have to determine if the foot clutch is slipping (probably) or the hand clutch (low or high side?) Adjusting the foot clutch pressure plate fingers will not fix the problem if the clutch is simply worn out.

Although not used for primary clutch adjustment, the length of the pedal rod will effect the clearance from the throw out bearing to the fingers. If the pedal is against the floor board and the rod has been adjusted long, as the clutch wears the fingers can contact the release bearing and cause the clutch to slip. Changing the length of the rod will change the clearance buy moving the yoke that holds the release bearing, same effect as pushing on the pedal.

Need a serial number, it`s on the left side of the bell housing just above the frame rail on a flat spot.
