I purchased a L3 combine last spring and have been using it this fall.  It has some issues with the steering.

It has a bad case of the "wanders" when driving on the road.  I have adjusted the toe-in to 3/16" and the tie-rod joints are all tight.  The steering ram dead heads each direction when I turn the steering wheel, and the steering wheel won't rotate any further, so I don't think the steering cylinder or steering motor have any internal leaks.  It does have 12.4x24 bar tread tires.  Are these worse for steering control on roads than a rib tire?

Another issue is any time I activate a hydraulic function it causes the steering wheel to jump/jerk in my hands - raise/lower header, swing auger, etc.   Several years ago the previous owner had the hydraulic pump replaced due to a failure.  Could there be some debris lodged in a valve somewhere?  Where should I start looking or how do I test the system?

Last, the steering motor in the cab makes a lot of howling/squawking noise when dead-headed or turning under load or low engine RPM.  Our previous M2 did not require the steering effort or make the noise that this L3 does.  I realize the L3 with 426 engine and straw chopper is a lot heavier on the rear than our M2 was, so maybe this is normal?

I know on my Deere 4400 that the pivot bushing for the rear axle is worn and that causes the whole rear axle to wobble on the pivot point.  Could be an area to look at.  When I go down the road the wobbling of the axle is like its steering back and forth, and when you chase it it causes the axle to wobble in the opposite direction and its sort of compounds the problem.

Cant help you with the other stuff.  Orange tractors maybe, but not combines.

Our F3 does this, I always thought it was normal.  I assume you feel just a small jerk in the the steering wheel, not that its jerking out of your hand?

Russ, I helped Dad this fall with both L3's one with rwa and one without. I can't say either machines do any of the things your describing, granted they don't steer like a car but it doesn't take much effort, there is no noise when steering and no jerk when useing other hyd funtions while steering. Let us know what you find.

The steering cylinder is leaking in the middle of the stroke.....carefully re-seal it and it should drive straight down the road. The momentary "jerking" I feel is normal.....my brothers R50 has always been like that. You didn't say what year the old M2 was....I'm guessing 1979 or older and they had a different hydraulic system/valves stack on them. The humming is probably a hose or the steering orbitrol itself touching the metal steering column and amplifying the hydraulic oil flow noise.

We trashed the pump last year on our M3.  It steered great before, but now once it warms up, it steers like a Mack truck.  Going down the road when its hot is the worse as it will barely turn sometimes.  When harvesting in 80deg weather like this year, the oil is heating up pretty fast too.  I'm think there is some dirt in the steering priority valve causing the spool to stick and building pressure heating up the oil.
