Have my recently purchased 2wd 6080 in the shop going through it and finding its had a bit of a poor life with some crappy maintenance, and slowly getting some issues sorted out. One problem i haven't figured out, which may not be a problem at all, is the brakes. There is very little travel in either brake pedal, and as soon as you touch them the brakes lock up. No easing or feathering the brakes, its all or nothing. But at the same time the brakes don't seem to be partially engaged or dragging as the tractor rolls freely.
Is this normal for the 6000 series or is there something going on? |

My "well used" 6060's brakes take very little effort to get 'er whoa'd , just touch 'em.

They dont have alot of free travel but that can be adjusted I believe if you want - pull the small side panel off up by the steering wheel, to see how it works -you can pull the shaft out as it is splined to get more free play by rotating it - I believe this can be done, been a few years since Ive worked on one of these

I dont have a 6000 series tractor but I recall reading that the brake system on them is seperate from the hydraulic system and is master cylinder and brake piston similar to a light truck. I had a ton truck that had a leaking master cylinder and would get air in the lines and the brakes would grab

I think you just need to get used to them. If they stop the tractor and don't make any noise doling so, just live with it.

If they run in oil sometimes yellow bucket oil can cause that

The brake pedal shaft is dried up and not releasing like it should in my opinion. Had the same thing happen on my 6060. Remove the panels on the dash and pull the brake pedals out the RH side, clean up and grease the shaft and reinstall. Worth a shot.

The poster didn't say both pedals move together as if they were located together. If you use your two feet, with one on each pedal, depress the pedals equally and then osscilate the pedals with one foot down and the other up lightly. This will insure the pedals aren't rusted together on their pivot shaft.

Pedals arent rusted together, work independently just fine.
The brakes themselves stop the tractor and don't make any grinding noise like metal on metal, you just can't ease into the brakes. Bit of a pain when pulling a square baler and load of hay down the road, and you have to try to slow down without throwing all the hay off the wagon. |

Our 6060 has really good brakes and as said do not require much travel to activate the brakes. They can be feathered or to full stop with little effort. If it has been sitting for awhile it may be that they just need to be used a bit. The system takes a special fluid not BRAKE FLUID. May not be a bad idea to drain the system and refill with the correct fluid. That could be your problem

I have a 8640 JD if you put 303 Yellow Bucket the brakes will chatter and grab. Use 821 or cenex hydraulic and transmission they will not. |

303 is NOT a hydraulic / wet brake fluid...you'll have more than chattering brakes running that

I don't use it but is labeled as transmission & hydraulic fluid for wet clutches & wet brakes. |

Anytime I buy a used tractor I always drain all fluids and change them unless there is good documentation showing it was recently replaced with quality and correct lubricants, filters. If you haven’t already done so drain the transmission and differential and replace with 821 fluid. Drain and replace the brake system fluid with SAE 10W-10. The bleeding procedure is on page 65 of the owners manual. If someone put the wrong fluid in the brake system it will not work correctly.
