Nice job. I have to ask a question since I've never restored one yet. How do you paint the rims and not get paint all over the tires? It seems to me that if you paint the rim first and then put the tire back on, it would get scuffed up from the tire spoons. And if you try to tape off the tires, the tape never wants to stick.

A film of vaseline is a good mask for the tires. Maybe not as hard on the rubber as chassis grease which also does that function. A soap film would probably work too, like concentrated dish washing detergent applied only to the tires and left to dry before painting.

I always run a thin strip of 3m tape around rim, then I use a wide strip of 3m tape. Then I use plastic you can get from automotive paint store to go around tire with some more tape to hold it in place. But the trick to it is paint one side at a time ( usually I lean the tire and rim agianst the wall to paint. hope this helps....... |

I've heard tell of guys breaking the bead and then put your masking paper all around in the bead then air tire back up just till bead seats. after paint has dried break bead to pull out paper. For me, if I'm using new tires, I just paint them without rubber. Then mount tires with tire lube. I can normally get them on by hand and only have to spoon one spot. What did the mfg do? |

In a farming mag Someone wrote in and suggested some flat aluminum flashing wrapped tight around rim.Never tried but sounds plausible.
