Is it practical to add a coolant recovery tank to a stock HD5G 2-71 Detroit Diesel? What, if any, modifications would be needed?

Just have to locate the bottle properly and find a comparable later model semi radiator cap that will allow the return from the tank to radiator as cools. Top lip of Radiator cap boss has to seal tight as the old units did not as were not designed for recovery tanks.

Is this really necessary to do on an older unit? The coolant bottles were installed to downsize the radiators by the OEM's to both lessen weight and $$$ to build the machine. If your cooling system is maintained properly there really isn't a need. Not a bad idea regardless, but no real benefit either.

HD5 is not a pressure system . it's open to the atmosphere - with a overflow tube below the radiator cap .
First you would need to change the fill neck ,cap area of radiator to allow flow from it to the bottle , then a cap that allows revers flow by vacuum back to radiator . Next is the question of WHY ? |

It would be difficult to correctly describe this radiator as having been "maintained properly" by the previous owners Thanks everyone for the helpful input |

On a HD5B I had - I needed it on a job and waiting for a radiator to be repaired I put a radiator from a 49 Chev pickup into machine - I was a 8 pound pressure cap on radiator and it worked in bolting into machine - only problem was size of cooling area was not enough to prevent overheating under heavy load - at full throttle the hear gauge moved up quickly under load .
I got the job done but had to watch close on where heat was , with a larger core it probably would have worked but the 6 cyl gas engine evidently doesn't produce the heat of a 2-71 engine even though it is a lot less cubic inches . |
