Because he chose the jewel-encrusted golden chalise... Which would NOT have been found in any sensible establishment at the time. Instead, Indy drank from the wooden cup... Which would also have been equally unlikely in an Eastern Mediterranian context of the era. A low-fired clay cup would have been the most common... wood was too valuable, and not serviceable as a turning for something as insignificant as a cup, when low-fired clay was not only plentiful, but robust, inexpensive, extremely durable and easy to sterilize... But hey, it's a movie...

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

Had this discussion not of the Movie but the Cup in a Retreat weekend as a Catholic HS Student. The Priest brought out a Few typical of that period as well chalices of later design and had us look at them. As noted, VERY typical was a Low almost Coffeeish style saucer/cup with Two Handles. Sat low so would not tip easily, Fired Clay and many times NOT even Glaze sealed. A few would have Metal but was BIG $$$ mostly of Lead Alloy Silver or Pewter, not much Bronze or Gold, wooden was not unheard of as shown to us where were Carved not Turned. Really Expensive were Stone, again Hand Carved, not Turned.
We also got to taste the Typical Wine of the Day, more a Grape Juice aged slightly but way more grape flavor, very Low Alcohol Content, many times less than 2%. Edited by DMiller - 22 Nov 2022 at 8:37am |
