Hi a’ll, I’m working on a D21 that has been setting for about 15 years in a machine shed with injection pump off the whole time. The owner had tried to “fix” it himself which by the way failed but luckily had another parts pump, so I dropped off the two pumps in complete pieces at my local diesel shop so he rebuilt the best one with the best pieces. So now with the problem, I think the engine got turned a little bit with the pump off and so screwed up the timing so now I’m asking if anyone with experience could explain how to get it right. My brother and I tried to start it and we only got smoke, with a drip of starting fluid it would run for a second.  Thanks

That sounds like you are 180 degrees off. So, the injection pump drive shaft must have been removed from the engine ??? Because the drive shaft technically only fits into the pump ONE WAY.

Yes the drive shaft was taken out but I personally made sure it was lined up, the diesel shop made sure I knew.
I’m thinking because the original pump pretty much blew up it spun and I’m 180 degrees off after you mention that, it puts the puzzle together...
I also think the owner ran bio diesel in it right before it sat.

These gear/shaft assemblies are known to slip and then gaul in place when a DC pump seizes up. It is still usable, but the dot on the gear(if even has one) and the slit in center of shaft are no longer in proper orientation. It really does not matter though. With #1 injector out, and a plug stuck in hole, or friends finger, turn engine cw viewed from front until plug or finger blows out. Now you know you're on #1 compression stroke. Turn engine a little further until the 34* mark lines up. At this point is when the marks inside the pump need to line up, no matter where the pump gear dots go. They eventually did away with pump gear dots thankfully lol! Good luck!

We have a local injection shop who rebuilds a lot of pumps from IH tractors. I know of several AC pumps that he has sent back out 180 degrees. IH is on the other side of the engine.

I think it was my fault because I didn’t see the little timing dots on the gears, my brother found them while I was cranking the engine over...
I’m thinking about disking with it with my Dad’s older John Deere 20 foot disk..
But I don’t want to hurt anything on it so what’s other peoples opinion? Does anyone think it would hurt it?

20ft leveling disk? My XT handles our 20ft AC disk with no problem. Should be a walk in the park for a D21 if it’s a leveling disk.

Hmm, I’m not sure what it’s considered because it’s not the lightest but it’s not heaviest.
I know my Dads John Deere 4320 will pull it about right....

If the gangs are shaped like this >:< then it’s a leveling disk. If it’s like this \ : / then it’s an offset or cut disk. If it’s 20’, it would most likely have 4 gang wings. Look up a AC2000 disk, it is a leveling disk.

Well we hooked it on to a 25 ft John Deere field cultivator and it pulled okay!! We only used it because it was the only tractor available at the time to bring up sticks…

Yes, my Dad and my older brother decided to help too. It wasn’t listed anywhere but my Dad bought the farm it and the rest of the tractors was/are on and we decided we couldn’t see them go so the owner ( my cousin) said he’d sell everything on the farm to us if we wanted them.

Well the fuel tank needs cleaned really good because it has loose rust that keeps plugging up the sentiment bowl holes…
It would plug up and die…

I don’t think it would have gone to a buyer that wasn’t going to take care of it…
My cousin is a purebred Allis guy, he grew up on Allis and he still loves them, only reason he never fix these up is he’s 82 years old…

It’s quite a list but I can list what I remember…
1957 Wd45 with factory power steering, wd with a 33 picker, 1934 wc,2 1935 wc’s, 3 other parts wc’s, 1948? Wd (bad rear end he thought), parts wd, a 770 4 row planter, a snap coupler 4 row planter, and 4 18” plow.
That’s everything I can remember…
That was as a package deal but before that decision I got a 45 with a d19D repower and a ‘49 wd for myself…
