If you cant find one Star speedometer can repair your old tach and make a new factory correct cable. I highly recommend him.

I second star speedometer if you have a core.
He rebuilt my 185 and D17 tach. great work and a great guy.
Don't spend money on a used tach that might die next week. Get yours fixed so it'll last 30 years.

Haim has done 3 tachs for me. Couldn’t be happier. They come back like new from AC and operate flawlessly. With a full 1 yr warranty

I’ve had 3 reconditioned, all 3 the hour meter did not work and they had leaked and ruined the decal. Needle jumped around. Now they look and operate like new.

He is on vacation until the end of August the last time I talked to him. But I’m sure if you leave hm a message he will call you back.

That’s my D17 diesel tach, I had him leave the hours on it when it broke. Or he will reset it to 0.

It looks like I can order a new one from YT for $75 and a new cable is 35. I'm not sure what he charges to fix old one's or how these replacement units compare?

First off, the original tachometers were a quality gauge. My 3 tachometers were fully reconditioned. New glass, decal, bezel, mechanically completely cleaned, hour meter repaired. $225 each. Yes it’s not cheap but it should last another 40 years. I’ve talked to multiple people that have purchased after market tachometers that only lasted 20-50 hours or less. I’m glad I repaired mine, they haven’t worked this well in a long time.

Most of us have long ago learned that buying cheap imported parts to try to replace original AC parts may be cheaper, but the quality is, not only poorer, but often complete junk.

The cable about 3 in away from the distributor keyway shaft where it's driven off of is where the cable broke it looks like it's twisted in half so I don't know if yeah I just need a new cable or how to tell if this gauge might still work with just ordering a new cable?

If you measure your cable, he would probably make and sell you a new cable as well.

Haim will gladly make you a new cable like the original. He will ask the model of the tractor. If you remove the cable from the tractor and send it to him then he knows exactly what you have even if it’s broken. Then you can test your tach. Beware of the aftermarket cables, a good friend of mine ordered one, had the wrong end on it for the engine. They sent him another one and the same issue. So he had to send both of them back. Now he is getting one from Star Speedometer as soon as he comes back from vacation. Makes them for D,100, 200 series tractors.

Getting a new cable and putting it on this tack worries me a little because is it possible that the tack being bad ruined the cable somehow?

I don’t believe a defective tach will damage a cable as they are very robust. Most likely your drive in the tach is worn. You can also ship it to Star Speedometer to get a quote. He will inspect it and give you an estimate. I had mine fully reconditioned but yours may only need a drive and cleaning. That would cost you much less. Depending on how much time your tractor has spent outside in the elements factors in how much damage occurs. Obviously a tractor that is stored inside, the cable and tach will less likely to draw moisture than one that spends a lot of time outside. If you choose not to repair it then he will ship it back to you. All your out if your shipping charges. Haim is a great guy, pleasant to talk to. Give him a call and ask questions. He stays very busy so don’t expect a quick turn around especially since he took some time off.
