I wish we had some more garden pulling locally. I would think the diesel should do well. Rare machine for sure

around here seems everyone wants the AC gassers for pulling, i have one (don't remember the # right now) without a mower deck and i could have sold it it 50 times over for a pulling garden tractor

Until you are allowed to use a turbo, any gas engine of the same size can be easily made to make more HP than a diesel.

If only stock engines were allowed how would it do? The few pulls Ive been to seams everyone runs modified engines. 30 years ago it was stock engines at our fair pull. Really enjoyed watching those, tires were the only modification allowed. It would be cool to see how it would do with a tiny turbo on it. If gassers can be modified, why not a diesel?

I wanted to see how my 720 with the flotation tires would do but it weighs too much to get in a class. It sure is a beast in the garden.

On any gasoline fired engine, you do two main things to increase the HP. #1. raise the compression..a lot. This requires using racing gas (110 to 116 octane).   #2. Install a larger carburetor and increase the RPM's.    These are the two main ingredients.  Now, the diesel ?? Well, you can try to turn up the fuel delivery and gain a very little. What you will gain is a ton of smoke. That's why a turbocharger is needed to pack more air into the cylinder to burn the extra fuel. If you look at any farm tractor gas/diesel comparisons, the diesel almost ALWAYS has more cubic inches to make similar HP.   A-C 190 XT gas 301 cubes makes 89+ HP at the PTO.  A straight 190 diesel (non-turbo 301 cubes) makes 77 HP at the same RPM's on the PTO.  Raising the compression and a larger carb on the XT would easily go over 100 HP. The 190 diesel ?? maybe 80 HP and tons of smoke. That's just the way it is.

Mmmmm. Ed massaged my XT pump when he rebuilt it. Same turbo, fuel flow wasn’t upgraded and he says he has set for around 130 hp. No doubt it has more power now but is still very stock up to 2400 rpm. Between 2400-2600 she is a different beast. Obvious when I take it to a pull that she isn’t stock from my seat. Still a farm tractor up to 2200, then she starts to build more power quickly after that.

Well, if it truly has 130 PTO HP, the fuel delivery has been increased from the 94 HP @ 2,200 RPM it was originally set at.  35 more HP doesn't come from nowhere. It requires more fuel and/or RPM's.

Dr Allis you are correct, let me rephrase what I should have said. No additional fuel pump nor modification of the existing fuel system other than turning up the pump. My 5.9L in my 07 Ram can be altered greatly with just a tune installed. Up to 100 hp if I so choose, however at 320 hp stock there is no need. It would be a neat project to install a mini turbo on it or modify the pump.
