Hello, looking for some carb help for a rookie.
Had to get a replacement carburetor for my Series 1 D17. One that came on it was beyond rebuilding, but that's another story. The "new" carb is a Marvel-Schebler TSX871 that was professionally rebuilt by a carb shop. The issue I'm having is that there's no middle ground with the carb's operational spectrum. It's either low idle speed, or engine sounds like it's running at 150% with about an 1/8" movement of the throttle lever. The throttle & choke linkages have no problem rotating each of the disks through each's full rotation, so I'm not worried about that. My thought is that maybe the adjustment screws are way off from the shop. What should each of them be set to as a starting point? Can't find any info on this online or in my user manuals. Other ideas or help would be much appreciated!
Thanks, Nick |

I think you should be looking at the governor section of your manuals. Sounds like the throttle/governor linkage and/or the governor/carburetor linkage needs to be set so the governor can properly control the RPMs.

Engine OFF. Pull the hand throttle wide open. Disconnect the link rod from the vertical governor arm behind the generator. The length of the link rod should be just so it will slide back into the hole on the vertical governor arm. It is probably too long. Bend the link rod to shorten it, Just slide in the hole without touching the vertical arm.

Thank you, gentlemen!
My carb to governor linkage rod is a redneck hodge-podge, so that could easily be the culprit after hearing your responses. It's a shortened throttle rod + a piece of sheet metal. Worked on the old carb, so I didn't think much of it. Previous carb had a welded conglomeration of washers to control the throttle shaft.
Just bought a new d17 throttle rod on ebay to rule out the cheap-n-easy culprit & reduce the redneck engineering on my tractor. Will do some reading on the governor mechanism while I wait. Maybe it will be a simple fix... If anyone knows suggested carb adjustment starting points, I'll try that as well. Not so confident in myself to figure that piece out ha. Thank you for the help! |
