It doesn't take much to power a properly adjusted sickle bar with sharp knives and ledger plates. The No. 5 mower for the B and C tractors could be had with a 5, 6 or 7 ft cut bar. Having a seven foot bar on a small tractor requires some thought if used on side hills. Raising any bar, let alone one that long with the bar on the down side of a hill can get you in trouble. I mention this because in my neck of the woods, we have to deal with hills a lot.
Mowing with a seven foot bar as opposed to a five foot bar will increase productivity a whole lot; like as much as 40% if you can mow at the same speed.

I use a 7 ft on a B to cut along the road ways.. If the boy lets the weeds/ grass grow up to 4-5 ft on the farm , i sometimes use the sickle to cut it down instead of the bush hog... Brian is right, that side of the tractor is HEAVY.. Dont get on any type of side hill... I have thought about adding 100 pounds of weight off to the opposite side..... The left rear tire can get a little LIGHT if you run the right side too far off the side of the road.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Please listen carefully to the comments above.  The B-C mower will mount a 7' bar with no problem.  We found problems in the side draft that pulled the tractor to the right when in heavy mowing.  Also, as stated above be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when working on hillsides with a 7' bar.  Just too heavy for a B-C tractor.
In fact, we NEVER put a 7' bar on the B-C mower. Just too much to safely handle
Good Luck!

we grew up on ground that when the bales came out of the baler they rolled half way to the bottom of the field,  and the swather allways trying to pull the back of the tractor down hill ,   four  wheel hay wagons were a no no they were way to scary could only load hay on trailers.      but this is all pretty flat ground now and it has calcuim in the  tires.  my concern is if the mower frame and pitman can handle it , and can the  lift parts handle the weight , will it take all of my 168 lbs. to pull on the lever    this is the new toy so if i am going to use it i have to get somthing done

I built a ROD out of 3/4 inch water pipe to run from the "lift" , under the seat to the back end... have a pivot point and use the small B hydraulic cylinder to "LIFT" .... Yea, its a pain to do it manually... Should be a spring at the front to "help".
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

I have some of those standard balance springs for the B/C mowers. I also have one that is a much stronger spring of the same dimensions except for a much larger wire diameter. There is a factory part for the hydraulic lift connection.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY
