Do you guys suffer the same struggles that i do. I always second guess and worry about something i just fixed. The harder the project the more i tend to worry. I'm mainly thinking auto repair but this can apply to any type of repair to be honest.

Now don't get me wrong i know what I'm doing when it comes to the auto repair. I have either done it in the past or I've studied up on it before tackling the job. But no matter how it goes i always worry when the vehicle rolls out of the shop.

I will worry, did i get everything tight or i hope i got that gasket in right. I'll worry did i get enough silicone on the gasket. Did i over silicone it so that will cause a leak.

When I'm fixing I'll stop part way through and just look at the job. Look at my parts pile. I'll talk to my self and touch the parts I've already put in. I'm trying to give my self that extra boost of confidence. But at the end of the day i still worry. And i think the main thing is I. Want to put out a good repair, I want the customer happy the first time and not need to make a warranty appointment, but most of all I don't want to hurt the customer.

I have that happen from time to time. Most recent one was, “Did I tighten the fork bolts that move the throwout bearing on the cotton stripper?” It’s been a while and the clutch operates fine, so I’m guessing I’m worrying over nothing.

Double check yourself through the entire process, stay organized and don't get in a hurry.
Rushing through it will get your butt kicked most every time.
There is always going to be that nagging doubt especially on a complicated repair.
Have faith in that the Great White Buffalo will never let you down if you did the best you could.

I don't worry. My uncle second guesses my work all the time. Beyond that, I agree with fixer
The fact you worry about it shows you care. Have faith in yourself and you should be fine.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Recently put a 301 gas from a 715 combine in my 756. Lots of things had to change, including the cam in this case. I was apprehensive at many points in this journey. Did I get the cam timed right? Are all the new gaskets going to seal? Is there any insider info I'm not aware of? This bothered me more on this project than most because of the amount of work to fix anything that was wrong.

Happy to report that It did not have to come back apart. She's up and running and going on her first tractor ride in three weeks.

One always second guesses but sometimes you realize your in charge of your own mind and abilities .
As doing millwright work on production equipment I got it many times from managers of can you fix it and how soon . Answer was YES it will be running when I am done and when I am finished I will let you know . If you want to talk about it it will take longer, now let me do my job .
Had to replace a gearbox on a machine but found the input worm gear was on wrong side of gearbox so strip down the new one - reverse the input - reassemble all the time of having 3 office managers looking on and questioning WHY I was doing something .
Said it was my break time so i could either finish now without their help or go to break so they could figure out how to do it themselves - they left and I got machine running in a few minutes .
Life lesson: If you’re being chased by a lion, you’re on a horse, to the left of you is a giraffe and on the right is a unicorn, what do you do? You stop drinking and get off the carousel.

@bobkyllo; I was the same way when I started out brother. Every repair I did I would fret and worry and second guess and question. And I think that is a good thing because it made me very conscientious to do any repair right. But eventually I came to have confidence in my abilities and my knowledge and my experience as a mechanic. So, by the time that I moved on from wrenching, I didn't worry and fret so much.
fixer1958 gave GREAT advice. I'll reiterate: Do the best you can with what you have where you are. After all, you cannot do any better than your best. Right?

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one in this boat.

Like I say I usually at the half way point I touch the work I've already done and at the same time I have a conference with my self. For example I did the timing cover on a GM 3800 it come in with a water leak. I know what kind of bone head sends water thorough the timing cover but gm thought it to be a good plan.

Any ways I stop and I no touch the cover bolts and I ask my self "ok I've got these tight" then I'll answer my self. Then I'll move on to say the water pump and I'll touch it and all my self about maybe the gasket and the bolts.

I know this might sound stupid but I've come across things that I've forgotten to do. I know customers look at me strange from time to time

Not stupid. Things happen. It's how you handle these situations that define you. I've had my share of mishaps in the service trade. Early in my career one was bad enough the boss ripped out our ad in the client's phone book saying don't call us again. Learn, improve, and be confident

I try to replay it in my head which is why I can’t talk while I am working. If I can’t remember doing it I go back and check it. Doing what you are doing is a good idea and seems to work for you. Tell the customers they are not allowed in the work area or really make them think you are crazy. I usually lose it when they leave the shop and call back in an hour and I recognize their number and I have that ole sh&$ moment. Interesting thing happened to me today, customer called asking what kind of injectors I put in his truck three years ago, he had it at another shop and the mechanic can’t figure out what is wrong with the truck. He thought I used aftermarket but I never use those I only use Ford reman. Pissed me off he took it to someone else’s and calls me wanting me to diagnose it over the phone. On a Saturday…..

Yes, I've always run the job thru my head at least once trying to uncover any mixup before it leaves.  And always look the machine over for tools, hardware etcetera before moving it out. Been doing that since I was 17, that's 49 years.

Should have questioned one, a month ago battery in wife's car went bad So I disconnected the alternator wire over night to make sure it wasn't a bad alternator. This morning she calls from work that her lights were going dim going into work, Went in and checked it for her and found a lose wire on the alternator, I must have only hand tightened it when I changed the battery and never put a wrench on it. JUst made another days work for myself.

Sometimes I'm glad I don't charge. Neighbor lady ran over something with her zero turn and the deck was vibrating badly. I looked at it and after removing both blades and overlaying them on top of each other one had a slight bend. Took it back to her and said it needs new blades. Next week she brings me the new blades and I install them. Deck shook just as bad. Pulled belt off to spin the spindles and one had the bearing out of it. So bad the balls fell out as I spun it by hand. Told her she needs a new one. Next week she brings me a new spindle and I install it. You guessed it. Still shook just as bad but this time I was at a loss on finding anything else. At that point I told her I'm out and time for someone with fresh eyes to look at it. Felt bad for her but I was to a point that I would start replacing everything that might cause it. My luck it would have been a warped deck causing it. Last I heard she is getting a guy to cut it for her and she plans on replacing the mower next spring.

YES, got to the point I did two types of repairs, the; I've got hay down, it just needs to last 1 more field-day-week-cutting. the other repair was "zen and the art of motorcycle maintince: work slow and methodical, go check the book, and if all else fails get a drink and sleep on it, and maybe go ask somebody who would know.
