There has been a lot of discussion about rear tire sizes for the WD and I've read several of the posts. However, I'm in the process of restoring my WD and subject to the current availability of tires. American-made 13.6 X 28 tires are not currently available in my area due to Covid and I try very hard not to buy anything Chinese made if I can help it. I can get Iowa-made Firestone tires in 14.9 X 28, which I'm leaning towards doing. Question: Are there any good reasons (other than cost) why I might not want to put 14.9 X 28 tires on my 1953 WD NFE tractor? I'll be using the tractor for mowing (both sickle bar and rotary) and do have a set of rear wheel weights I could put on if needed. Thank you in advance for any help and/or insight.

A 12" wide wheel is recommended for a 13.6X28 tire and a 13" wide wheel is recommended for a 14.9X28 tire. If your WD wheels are original, they are probably 10" or 11" wide. On the other hand, they may have been upgraded to at least a 12" wide wheel. I've seen plenty of 14.9X28 tires on 12" wheels and although not ideal, it will work.

YA! the wheel width would be the deciding issue----depending on how picky you are of course! lol! --- Around here -- "if it fits----RUN IT" lol!

I like the size of the 14.9-28s on our WD series tractors. I just think they look better. Firestone's should be good ones. Not sure where the Crop MAX are made but I have 3 sets of those in 14.9-28. Yea I widened the rims on all of them.
Here are crop max tires 14.9 next to the 13.6-28.

With 14.9 tires you won't be able to spin the wheels all the way to the narrowest position on the rim before hitting the fenders. 14.9 is what is currently on my WD. On that note, when the WD was Dad's he had 16.9 x 28 tires!

You might check out Mitas tires. They are made in Charles City Iowa. If I still owned my tire shop, 13.6x28 Mitas 6 ply tires would cost you $361.36 each. That price is mounted at the tire shop. 14.9x28 8 ply would cost you $413.82 each put on the tractor at the shop. They have the 45° bars on the tires like originally came out on the wd-wd45's. Unfortunatly the website where I used to get my Firestone/Titan/Goodyear rears is down. Please put new radial tubes in them. The last fifty or so bias tubes I got split at the seams. I posted the prices so you can compare with your local dealers. I'm guessing they will be somewhat higher as I am 3 hours away from the factory, freight will probably make them higher in your area.

14.9-28 are nice tires on a WD, I have Firestones on new 13" rims from Miller Tire. Highly recommend going with the proper width rim, my old tires were 13.6-28 on the original 10" rims and the tread face was so round I had fluid and 4 sets of weights and still spun while plowing. New tires with no fluid and 3 sets of weights and still have more traction.
