D14 Starter Problem

I've been having some starter issues for a couple of weeks on my D14. Sometimes it would only click when I turned the key; just click once when I turned the key and click again when I turned it back. I'm assuming that was the solenoid kicking in and out.

It's done this in the past and I'd loosen the retainer bolt on the side and wiggle the starter and retighten to get a better ground on it. That would usually do the trick. This time it didn't do any good.
 
I sanded the connection areas where the starter grounds to the hole and inside the hole and reinstalled the starter and still had nothing.
 
Now it's to the point that the solenoid won't click or do anything. I have 14.3 volts at the battery cable going to the top of the solenoid. I've tried jumping the terminals on the solenoid and it won't click now that way either.
 
What do you guys (and gals) think? Solenoid? Ring gear?
 
Also, is there a way to ground the starter another way? I've heard of someone putting on another ground wire and grounding it to the neg. side of the battery but not sure what they attached the wire to on the starter.
 
Any suggestions is appreciated.

Check the voltage at the output of the solenoid as it goes into the starter. If low you have a solenoid problem, if same, or near same, as in put to solenoid then you have starter problem.

Jumping the solenoid(the right way) will bypass the elctro magnet and you won't need a click. If you jump from the battery input to the starter wire, and it doesn't work, your starter is probably no good.

Could be anything from the key switch to the Starter motor. Start at the Ignition switch and work forward and troubleshoot. The Ignition switches in the "D" series were a bit light for the "stacking" of wires at the back of them. The "stacking" would cause a lot of resistance as time went on along with Mother Nature playing havoc, which eventually took out the wiring system. Seen quite a few cobbled up wiring systems (especially the D14) because of that occurance. We have a heavier upgraded switch with a plug to plug on the back of the switch instead of "stacking" circuitry as the factory did if you find the switch is the culprit. Wouldn't surprise me if the switch was the problem.. HTH

Pull the starter and hook up jumper cables to see if it kicks.   Put it on the ground and hold it down with your foot so it don't take off on you.  Sounds like the bendix.

I thought D14's were 6 volt?
Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.

My D-14 starter drive used to jam on the ring gear. Looseing the retaining bolt and rocking the tractor worked for some time, but eventually didn't. I had to get a new ring gear from AGCO. They come with two different numbers of teeth and, of course, mine was not availble after-market. But the AGCO RG was not too expensive. Jamie, if you pull out the starter and roll the engine over 1/4 turn or so, reinstall the starter and she spins the engine, this may be your problem

Thanks for all the advise guys. It may be the weekend before I can get back in the shop the way my schedule is looking. I'll post my when I get to her. It just broke my heart to miss a show Saturday and Dad's Deere went instead! We still had a blast.

Got back to her for a couple of minutes yesterday. I jumped it from the pos. battery cable at the solenoid to where it goes into the starter and she turned over. But, the wire got really hot that I was using. I was using a light weight jumper cable so I figure the wire was too small.

That bypasses the solenoid and the switch so now I've got to figure out which it is. Atleast neither of them cost a fortune.
