Well you may remember the WD-45 I've been working on for my relatives' that had a giant piece of wood in the gas tank, gunk in the carb, and had no spark. Well I've got parts in for the gas tank and the carb gasket, so I need to put that all back together (and maybe do one more cleaning pass on the gas tank first), but today I went and worked on the spark issue.

Looked like new battery cables and stuff in the last 20 years and connections were shiny and I had voltage to the coil. Started out good. Then popped the distributor cap off, and got no spark at the points.


Took me three tries to clean the points. Tried to not go abrasive, but was getting literally nowhere. Finally got some fine emery cloth. Worked at it for a bit. Then went back over it with some card stock. Finally, used my old carpenter pencil to pop the points, AND THERE WAS SPARK!



So at this point, I put everything back together, and wouldn't you know the head popped off my spark plug tester. No problem I said, I'll hold it in the middle of the wire...

Some of you are already cringing or laughing at this point. But yes, I held the wire, pulled the starter, and got some fantastic bright bulb flashes about the same time I felt the jolt hit my hand lol. Live and learn.

So now that we've got spark, just got to get fuel put back in here and top off the fluids and see if she'll fire up! Already went ahead and replaced the old cracked shifter boot while I was in there today.



Also for the curious, I took some pics of that hydraulic reservoir on the right hand side... Seems plumbed in to the main hydraulic system?







Can't figure out what they'd have run off the two remotes in the back that would've been that thirsty, but seemed interesting.

Going to start back in on the carb and the gas tank on Monday probably... And we'll take it from there!

Hmmm... Do ya'll think the dip stick in the regular hydraulic reservoir is still correct to go by?

 Good looking WD45 tractor project and your making headway. Spark, Gas compressions and timing close and it should run just fine!

     Looks like you'll have a handy tractor when you get it running and maybe a bath.
     Question: The weights on the rear wheel look to be French and Hecht weights. Just wondering what number they are if you have a minute to look. From what little I can see they look to fit up OK. I have some that are No. 162 that I want to try to mount on a WD. Thought yours might be the same.
     Keep us updated on your progress and thanks for all the pictures.

What is that piece behind the steering wheel bolted to the quadrant? Looks like the steering shaft goes straight into it and it has a gear reduction or something to the steering wheel itself.

Thanks Chris!

Didn't make a ton of progress today. Got working on the gas tank and put about 3 pounds of nuts and bolts in it to knock debris out, and no real rust or anything, but first time flushing it I got some yellow gunk. Took 3 good clean and dry sessions after the nuts and bolts to finally get "clean" gas back out of it. Progress!

Sure, I'll be glad to check -- any idea where the number is located on the weights? I'll check next time I go out to my cousin's.

I am told it is basically some sort of manual gear box to assist in steering since it has a loader on it but no power steering. It makes for a weird offset. Looking forward to test driving it if (when!) we get it fired up to see how that contraption works.

Thanks Chris. This is the 2nd owner of the tractor (their father owned it prior), but most of the upgrades to the tractor happened without their knowledge many moon ago. Hasn't run in 8-10 years. But hoping to change that soon!

The sump is a bit dry and the radiator is a bit low. All other fluids (loader, oil) seem proper, especially for sitting this long.

Well, spent today finishing up putting the carb back together. One of the screw holes in the new gasket was off by a a good 1/4 of the hole, but other than that it went back together good. The float needle valve was a bit sticky the first time, so I cleaned that out again and it seems to be better now. Both idle and main jet I am starting at 1 and 1/2 turns out (unless anyone has a better suggestion?).


Also putting the new sediment bowl together (had to swap parts over on the latter). This is ready to go into the gas tank and get re-installed.


So hopefully the next visit, I can finally put this stuff back on the tractor and see if it will start. Getting close!!

Thanks Chris! Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I take the drive back to my cousin's to try and get this beast fired up. Hoping this weekend if the weather cooperates I can get the gas tank and carb installed, check all the fluids, and hopefully see if she'll start! Fingers crossed!

Tank on the side was for the loader or a post driver would be my guess. My WD had it when I bought it and it also had a loader at one point as well as a post driver.
Good luck with the project, mine had not been run since 2004, rebuilt the carb, changes all fluids, points, plugs, condenser, battery and she fired right up.

GG, on your carb rebuild...make sure that the high speed needle is screwed in far enough to get through the packing and can actually make contact with the jet opening. The way to check this is with the assembly out of the carb - you should be able to see the needle through the opening in the side of the assembly. If not, the needle is being blocked by the packing, and no amount of adjusting will affect how the engine runs. To fix this, loosed the packing nut on the assembly. This takes the pressure off the packing and allows the needle to get through the packing. Then retighten the packing nut.

I  never understood how my Dad could "check the spark" when the ol' WC was running by grabbing hold of each of the wires in turn to see which were live.

Either his boots or his body was non-conductive.   I was not so brave.

Thanks Dave. Yeah, I had seen your post, so I made sure the needle of the carb was visible in the "hole" through that fitting before I re-installed it in the carb. So hopefully, all is well on that one, when I bottomed it out and backed up a turn a half!

Sugarmaker & Dave -- Thanks guys! Was hoping to make some progress today, but we had horrid thunderstorms roll thru the midwest here today, so that put a damper on my plans. Hoping to have some time during the extra long 4th of July weekend to make progress, in spite of the heat.

Gatz & Dave -- I have no idea how somebody would do that. I did it holding onto the insulation and it jolted my arm pretty good; would not want to try that stunt ever again.
