 Topic: WFE Installation Questions

I have an adjustable Wide Front End that will replace a NFE on a 1951 CA after it's painted.
#1 - Is it easier to install this heavy WFE all in one piece (front support and front axle, but without hubs or wheels), or should I install these two parts separately? I'm concerned that if the front axle is installed separately, I might have a hard time fitting it between the front pivot and the rear pivot after the front support is already installed. I do have forks on a front end loader that I can use to help install.
#2 - The hole in the front pivot bracket seems to be worn and elongated. Is this elongation part of the normal design? If not and normal steering would be affected, should I try to weld a bearing in the elongated hole to tighten things up?

I used carbon rod to fill the hole so I could fill in the lost metal with a welder.... that was on my WD. Don't know where to get carbon rod and more..... old fencer batteries used to have, I think 7/8" rods in them.

My neighbor used his mig and filled the elongated hole with welding wire.

I just used what my dad had bought about 15 years ago or so. They were spendy then too but he got them in one foot lengths not 4 foot. I think Praxair in Rochester MN had them..... I think they had to order the different sizes he wanted. Way back when, I guess carbon rod was commonly used and fairly cheap.

I have a worn rear pivot in a D17 Series 3 wide front end and was planning on building it up with weld and reboring. Have never used carbon rod. Do you insert this in the hole and build up weld around it?

I used a 7/8" 3 point adapter bushing,welded it in, grind to fit length, then put a new bolt. that is what I done on the rear pivot on one of my WD's

When I reinstalled mine I just rolled the complete front end and bolster under the tractor hanging from the cherry picker a 2x4 across the wishbone will support the bolster so it doesn't fall down some duct tape holds the 2x4 inplace. I did it by myself it wasn't that hard. Duct tape the tie rods to the same 2x4 as long as the wheels are some what straight it'll roll fairly well. Adjust the rest of the tractor with the cherry picker to get the final alignment.

I made up new three bolt front supports and new rear supports for all my WDs and WD45s. I have a few extra I would sell if anyone has an interest. email lselkriver@gmail.com
