how do I get the gear and flywheel off the shaft of the mower? Are they pressed on?

They are pressed on , and you have to be careful that they are pressed on the same length/distance they were before so that the gears mesh properly . I had one I had to take back to the dealer to get it adjusted before I could get my mower to work.
