Hey,
Looking at a 175D for sale, seems like a good tractor overall, but the 3 point hitch arms won't lower while the tractor is running. If you shut the tractor off and stand on them, they will go down, but when you start the tractor, they will raise all the way back up again, even while holding the lever in the lowering position.
Owner says the tractor had sat a long while and is unknown when the lift arms were actually used last.
Any suggestions on the cause and how to fix?

The linkage is froze up. Look under there and you will see a valve button on the traction booster valve, stick a punch in there and make sure the linkage that touches the button will move forward freely and that the button pops in and out.

I had to pull my valve off to completely free up the linkage on my 170 and 180.

Spray some lube on it before you punch it , itll ease the rust into the seals

I don't know if I will go back and make an offer or not. It has had a recent engine overhaul, No blow-by, new "brand x " tires. Rims are good. Doesn't jump out of gear. Sheet metal just about flawless. Still in its work cloths. Never had a loader on it. Other the arms issue, it seemingly needs only minor things, like a new muffler, a key switch.
The brakes will either need adjustment or replacement....since its likely they've never been adjusted, it might prove to be a job to get things freed up in that area....
Owner is asking 6k. Not sure what a fair offer would be.....

I agree, 6K is on the high side for that. By the looks of it, it has spent lots of time outside. I am 99% certain that the arms not lowering is the result of a rusted out traction booster linkage. There are several pivot points that seize up under the console. Most all of my tractor's problems were with the linkage and not the valve. Either way, it is a cheap fix, just takes time to take apart the trouble spots and get them freed up.

Engine overhaul... was that just new rings or was it out of frame with everything new that was required and crankshaft reground? and how many hours since? Rings and a valve grind are just what that is...maybe 3-5 or 10 years of use before more signs start showing up for a full OH. cost 3-500 bucks done by somebody else... Complete overhaul, can get costly...2500-4000 ??? bucks. New off brand tires can be 400 or more each and install...1000 bucks, nearer to 2000 if your putting on some new 18.4x28 Firestone tires...
Now, are the clutch and brake peddles check patterns next to or are completely worn off? It's been a loader tractor or was highly used a lot.
So the numbers can vary on the old tractor. If it was a cheap OH an cheap tires, then maybe 3 grand... If it was a major OH, and new tires and still has peddle tread have little or no wear...it should be worth the OH an cheap tires - 3000
+ 800 + couple hundred a thousand for tractor =4000-5000 bucks. The one above looks like it has been out in the elements for years, and has been so far that they put a whole new seat assembly on it to fix the slop in the old seat... and the grill has been off or off something else because the paint sure does not match..., No picture of dash, nor mention of hours on the tractor or tach but must have at least 6000 +/- hrs for an OV, if not more... The hydraulics having the draft /position linkage stuck is a minor matter. Cosmetics on the tractor are against it, but the mechanics inside it are
for it since it's not a gear jumper and maybe the two speed still has
good snap in it.
So toss all the pluses and minuses into the hat and stir it around and think about a number that you would want to sell that tractor for if it was yours and how little you would accept for your tractor... and then go and offer the seller that price.

$6000 is right in the ballpark here in WI. Those 170/175 tractors are just so HANDY! 90% of the Allis guys in my area have a 170 or 175 on the farm. Look at the front rims- original paint! That tractor has never been run in manure! That perkins diesel adds value over the gas engine all day long. They just sip the fuel! And the underside of the fenders have paint on them yet. But bottom line is you are in NY where parts are harder to find and the tractors themselves are harder to find. A look at the pedals like JC said and the drawbar wear will tell you haw much use its seen, if not much wear it is worth the price.

The last auction around here the 175 Diesel went for $7500. It was in very good shape and didn't need re-paint. I guess some people can repaint a tractor and just paint it, stopping the rust process. Others like me get into mission creep mode and end up replacing all seals, seat, hoses, gages, wiring even the steering wheel and on and on, $5000 bill.
It has been said that getting the hydraulics working on a 170/175 is not a big deal. Is that partly because all the valves, hoses cylinders linkages are external and you can get at it? Hit it with rust-bust and watch things move. Contrast to tractors where all the draft and position control valves and linkages are internal and you have to "pull the cover" to check it out. That makes it hard to diagnose or operate while partially assembled.
I guess if a 170 had a leak it ends up on the ground, while other designs keep it internal.

$6000 Is still very high for this particular tractor. I have seen 2 175s at auctions in the last couple of years. Both were very nice original tractors with pretty low hours and new tires. Neither one of them sold for over $5000. They looked far better than this one too.

Why would you spend all that money on a rebuild and let it sit in the weeds? Grill is nice, but there's a nice 190 xt series iii on classifieds for about $4000 and shipping would be $2,000 to NY. I suggest posting a video of it running and then the smart guys on here can tell you if it is worth it. Did you say they have receipts?

Alex, here is a picture of a clutch pedal on a 170 that has over 20,000 hours on it, and yes, it has a loader on it and gets started every day of the year practically... Definitely in the winter. It has been shifted untold number of times, maybe a half million times... an on the second clutch. ... I have seen worse clutch and brake pedals that were worn smooth from side to side.
