I just picked one up this weekend. how common were these? It was made by Athens and is in pretty good shape. I'll see if I can get some pictures up after a while. -Wes

It just depends on what part of the country you are in as to how common they are. In my part of the country, Northern Ohio, they are about as common as hen's teeth! I have only seen pictures of them. They were more suited for the sandier, looser, and rock-free soil of some of the southern states. Around here we have rocky and heavy, sticky clay soil. I would love to have a 2 bottom SC disk plow to put benind my D-14, just as a show piece. But, travel and time constraints, coupled with a shortage of that green paper with pictures a dead presidents on it, have put that on hold for the time being!

Disc plows were designed to plow anything that could not be plowed with a moldboard plow, and they do a good job in everything from loose sand to sticky clay and large roots. I have a 3 disc SC unit for my D14, and a semi-mounted 2 disc for my B and C tractors and have been impressed with how they will do decent work under nearly any conditions. They have become my favorite plows to take to plow days when I don't know what kind of ground we'll be plowing.

Wes: The 2-disc units are fairly common down south, but will draw a crowd in our part of the country. What size are your discs? I believe 26" and 24" were common for use with the CA, D10 and D12 tractors. Once they get worn down to 22" or so it's time to check with AgriSupply for some new ones, otherwise the bearing housings end up dragging in the bottom of the furrow.
