I've been doing a little rubbing on the 1951 Chevy, and it still has the original "Forester Green" paint. I believe it's lacquer paint. It has pretty good shine for being 67 years old, but I'm wondering if I could add a little more. I don't want to clear coat it. I've tried wax and different spray on products, and so far everything just seems to add a light haze to the paint, no matter how much or little I apply, or how I rub it on. So far it seems like the thing that works best for the shine I'm wanting is WD40, but it's pretty short-lived. I used some "Wizard's Mist-N-Shine" and that didn't do any good, or so I thought. Sprayed some on, rubbed it like the instructions said, and the result was kind of a hazy finish with swirls, and it seemed to get worse the more I rubbed it.
However...what I can't figure out...one spot, and one spot only, on the front of the hood turned out really nice. It almost looks like you clear coated it in that spot. The color was really brought out and is slick as glass. I can't figure out what happened there, because I used the same application/rubbing technique over the whole hood, and the rest just looked bad. Any ideas on what to try?

Clay bar might help some but it is mostly to remove dirt from an already waxed surface. You very likely have a layer of dead paint that will need to be removed by compounding before you can get much of a shine. The only problem is that you may remove too much paint with this process. Diesel fuel will shine up old paint but it won't last long. I am no expert in paint and body so don't take my advice as gospel.

Harbor Freight has this stuff if you use it with their DA buffer and buffing pad you can make almost anything shine. ![]() |

I had a 49 Olds that color and it was a beautiful color, one car I wish I still had.
I used good old rubbing compound and a lot of elbow grease, then Simonize I think it was called for waxing. But the rubbing compound brought out the luster of that green paint. It was a 12 year old car at that time.

My 52 was looking kind of dull and that stuff brought it back nice. |

"and one spot only, on the front of the hood" maybe a butt rub. Somebody maybe did a test of some wax or polish 40 years ago to see if it was worth doing the whole body and didn't see much of a difference and just left it... if that had been the case, to bad they didn't do the whole car at that time.
