    Posted: 20 Jul 2018 at 5:39am
Big storms last night. One of the Ducks sunk on table rock lake. 11 dead and 6 missing.
One sunk near Hot Springs several years back and they outlawed them in Arkansas.
The news showed video of it going down in the storm. Sad news.

Joe I was out in the shop working and had no idea that storm was in the area. It came out of no where and was gone quick. I don’t think the weather Chanel had any idea about it either.
I drove by lots of downed trees ang branches on the way to work but our job site is fine.👍
We’re also sending prayers for the families involved in the Duck tragedy.

I'll have to assume all 17 were NOT wearing life jackets  ?? I'd have thought thsat was a requirement of the tour ??
I will NOT get into any boat, even dockside without wearing one.

So sad to hear about that. We rode the ducks in 2009 when I was 11. The captain even let some of us kids come up and navigate the boat. I agree, they are not made for rough water. They're just an amphibious 2 1/2 ton army truck from the WWII/Korea time frame I believe.

The life jackets were stored overhead in two rows.  One row was kids size and the other was adults.  We were told not to put them on unless instructed by the boat captain.

Saw it on all the TV stations. Why would you even think about taking a boat out in those conditions? I have had my boat in some ugly water before and I always wear a life jacket. Better than what IF! Heart goes out to all the families.

No one's fault, just one of those storms that come up SO fast.  I've had it happen to me on the lake up here.  The bluffs off to the west hide anything until it is on top of you.
Praying for the families and the souls of the departed.

the one that went down in hot springs, life jackets would not have helped, the people were trapped under the canopy when it sank, they went down with ship. In hotsprings most likely geriatric group and no chance. I think that one was a bad or incorrectly installed prop seal, That scenario did cross my mind while I was crossing lake in terra tiger

I just saw video  some gal shot from shore and I don't understand why the adults didn't strap jackets on the kids and themselves and 'abandon ship'. Yes, i know they may not have been too far from shore and the 'captain' figured they could make it( one duck did).

If the captain did tell them not to put the jackets on it was probably because he did not want everyone moving around the boat and throwing the balance off. He probably thought he had it still under control at that time but boy he was wrong. No one would have kept me from putting on a jacket and bailing out. Your chance of surviving was much greater that way.

“That storm came out of no where and was gone in minutes.”

It came up fast, but there was plenty of advance warning. It was just ignored.

“...,,what kind of power do they have when on the water?”

The original power for land and water was a GMC 270, but quite a few were undoubtedly repowered by now.

some have diesel engines, the ones we rode in were 454 gassers. the exit/entrance on them is in the back, has fold down steps, a very narrow/cumbersome passage, not easy to get thru if in a hurry. most don't have side windows like that one had, that is why most couldn't get out. would have been kinda like pushing golf balls thru a 1/2 inch funnel.

I

What news channel do you listen to? The local news ( which is out of Springfield Mo next door to Branson) said that as soon as they got word of the storm they cut the trip short and headed to shore. Where did you hear they had plenty of advanced warning?

DUKW truck/boats were actually quite seaworthy. In talking with a vet who drove one. Quite obvious the boat that sunk was caught by surprise in the thunderstorm and some human error could be involved. I am sure the attorneys will get the problem solved. All around a terrible tradgedy.

And I’m thinking you’re correct. It looked like it tipped on its side and then sank. This wasn’t like a ship in the movies, it went on it’s side and sank quick.

It sounded like they were trying to get back to shore. I think maybe they turned and got hit sideways with a wave. Most boats can run into the waves. They had to know something was coming at some point because they did the water part of the trip first instead of the land. I guess we can all guess at what happened.

We rode one over in the dells. I'd say in bad water turning when be even more scary. Ours didn't have a roof. I wonder if the roof was just added. Don't need any extra weight up in the air.
