I seem to have a lot of anti freeze disappearing out of my 01 suburban with the 8.1 engine in it. Like about a half gallon every 100 miles. I haven't investigated thoroughly yet, but it's not going into the oil, which is good news. I am pretty certain that it's not going into any of the cylinders, because there is not a trace of white smoke. I've had it sitting on a concrete pad all day a couple times, and there is not a trace of a puddle under it. Kind of be-fuddling me. Any ideas. ..? Thanks, Darrel

Cracked heads or leaking headgaskets. Common problem with them

Small radiator leak. The AF evaporates too quick to drip.

put a bottle of BARS LEAK COPPER - gasket sealer in the system.. don't have to remove the antifreeze... will seal up in a couple days.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Check the bottom side of the water pump. GM is known for needing water pump gaskets every so often. Last Silverado I had wasn't leaking enough to see it anywhere but I could smell it every now and then. Got to looking and I found a wet streak from the left side water pump gasket

My '95 with the 350 did exactly that, one jar of Bars Leaks, and problem solved/delayed!
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

I have an 04 and and 03 Chevy, and both use coolant.  They especially use it in the winter.  I was told that these engines used different metals on the various parts/gaskets, and they dont seal well.

Hey Darrel,,,one would think that the engine would have a definate miss with that much coolant getting into the combustion chambers,,,which is prolly where it is disappearing to,,,,I know it's not what you want to hear but I've seen too many with that issue.
The sure fire "fix" is to get a compression check to see,,,# 1. which cylinder and #2. which bank the leak is on, then a tear down to see what the issue is. I wouldn't use any Stop Leak cause it tends to plug up ,,,other things,,,, Good Luck.Clap

Not sure about the 8.1, but the 5.3 are notorious for the intakes warping. They usually leak at the back, so it it runs on to the transmission and evaporates, so you probably won't see a puddle on the ground. My 2000 GMC started loosing water. I consulted a mechanic friend of mine, and he said the only way to fix it is to plane the intake. With labor that would cost around $600. Or he suggested adding a $10 bottle of Mendtite. That was 50,000 miles ago. Still no leaks. Wife's 05 Yukon had same problem. I've added a bottle to hers twice in 5 years.

The stuff I swear by is Blue Devil Block sealer.  Just pour in, and follow the directions, on the bottle.  Sealed up a kuboter block, so I tried it on my dodge duckoder...

No leaks, so far...Thumbs Up

Did it come with Dexcool?  And if so, did you change the  coolant as recommended, or change it to something else?  If not, when it degrades, it will eat the aluminum right out from under the head gaskets.

Not on any of the LS variants. All of them have dry plastic intakes.

I had the same issue with my 1996 S10 the 1st time the head gasket went bad. I was smelling coolant for months and occasionally having to top off the reservoir tank but NEVER saw a puddle anywhere. Took me months to figure out that the head gasket was leaking slowly off the back of the block and the coolant was actually dripping right onto the exhaust system. Leak never really got any worse but I tired of smelling and adding coolant all the time so eventually I had the head gasket replaced. The same thing has happened again 2 more times since then. About every 90K miles, the head gasket starts leaking again in the same spot and always to the outside thankfully. Only problem that I have ever really had with the truck. It is now pushing 291K miles on the rest of the original engine-just new gaskets occasionally-LOL.

No I haven't. I put a bottle of bars leak copper in it, and it is still disappearing, but at a slower rate. I wish now that I hadn't put that bars leak in there. I am sure that I have an external leak somewhere, because I can always smell anti freeze when I stop and get out, and there is an area around the passenger side that is always wet with anti freeze. Had that on a old suburban - I took and pressurised system up to 15 PSI - found it right away then - wwas a crack on one of the heater core inlet pipes , fixed it without taking the core out -

Naw, we are about burbed out. Thus one is our fifth one, and they have all been nice rides, but the kids are all grown up now, so it's very rarely that we need a vehicle like a burb. So I think that when this one dies, there won't be any more burbs at our house. Darrel

This area that gets wet on the passenger side is inside the vehicle or underneath the vehicle? Wet spot of anti-freeze inside a vehicle on the passenger side is a good indicator that your heater core has sprung a leak. Could still be heater core leak even if coolant is leaking outside but still on passenger side. Just depends on where the coolant leaks out of the compartment after it has exited the heater core itself.

Might wanna consider replacing heater hoses. Or, at the least, check the hose clamps. Shouldn't cost more than $20-30 to replace hoses and clamps.

My 99 yesterday smelled of antifreeze and I topped it off in the morning, we were using it to haul a gooseneck with big squares out of the field popped the hood and one of the plastic tanks on the radiator has a crack near the top and leaks when it gets hot. Telling the SIL about it and he said his suburban now is leaking by the water pump but runs down and along side the oil pan rail and drips off the back of the block.
