The (new to me) Chevy Silverado 1500 that I just got, has a plain ole AM/FM radio in it.
Well, I want to play CD's when I'm traveling, so I went to a junk yard and got one with the CD player in it.  I looked on line for how to get around the stupid lock thing and got the code and how to change it all out and get it to working.  I got the VIN number from the junk yard and a bill of sale.
That's when things went South. Angry  IF the radio says "LOC" when you install it and turn it on, you (meaning me) can use the code and unlock it and all's well.
When I put this one in it read "LOCKED" and now I've found out that I can't do this, I HAVE TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP.  They want $110 to unlock it for me and tell me it'll take about an hour.  I DO NOT believe that.....Angry
I suppose there is some kind of a machine that I need to plug into the radio to be able to change the code?  Can any of you guys help me out?  I can't see paying a dealership that kind of money for probably 10 minutes of work.

GEES.... you need a CODE to turn the radio on ?   I though 12 volts did that !
 
Is that a GM thing or everyone ?

it's sposed to be for the anti theft thing, most all vehicles since....well a while ago has this type thing. once they started this and the thieves found out about it, it has saved countless dash boards in vehicles from total destruction! my 1981 Caddy has it that way.

Honda/Acura will do the same thing when you disconnect the battery.
Try this, got it from my info

hold preset buttons 2 and 3 for 8 seconds until the first 3 digits of the code press and hold the AM/FM push button until the second 3 digits are displayed on the radio get a 4 digit code from GM press hr button for first 2 digits press AM button repeat to enter last 2 digits

When you have all the numbers call the dealer and they should give you the code.

I'd use Google to' unlock GM radio...) or similar.
If I was buying another vehicle , the 'locked radio' question would be asked !!
I do know ONLY 1997 radios connect into my 1997 F150.

Fixer, I already HAVE the code....
I just can't do anything with it.  There is NO info other than you HAVE to go to the dealer to get it input.
How does the dealer input the code?  THAT'S what I need to know...

You're running into the anti theft system. You'll need access to GM TIS 2 Web to do a anti theft relearn on the radio. There's no other way around it. Unless you have a friend at a GM dealer, they have you over that proverbial barrel...

Ted I installed a JVC aftermarket CD player in my truck for around $100.00 not counting install kit. Now I can tamale and receive calls and never take my eyes off the road or hands off the wheel. Only problem some of my crew hear personal calls from Jenn. Lol

I have a 2004 GMC Sierra that had a factory AM-FM radio. My son got a 2005 GMC Canyon with an AM-FM with a single CD player. My son put an aftermarket radio in his Canyon, so I thought I could use the AM-FM-CD from the Canyon in my Sierra ---- WRONG, not even the GMC dealer could overcome the anti-theft system because of differences in the two model years.

I know what you are talking about Brian. Never had to do it on a radio but have on other stuff with the antiquated chit I have to use. Can be a real PITA. Not if I had the equipment. $99 for 3 days I think with GM TIS 2, something like that. I have a guy that's an independent that can come around and reflash most any vehicle module for $100. He hasn't failed me yet.

YEP.......... first thing I would do is take GMS CRAP and throw it in the nearest TRASH CAN... Then get an aftermarket radio / tape and install... that works LIKE IT SHOULD.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.
