I have a 78 7020, around 6000 hours. It has the twist shift. Beginning last summer I have had problems getting it into gear. Specifically, 2nd gear in high or low. It is almost like it isn't reaching the gear. I adjusted the linkage behind the battery box (threaded L shaped bolt). When I loosen it up, I can get into 2nd, but then it kicks out of reverse. When I tighten, It does fine in reverse, but won't "reach" 2nd. Not sure if this makes sense or not, but it seems it has to be a linkage that needs tightened somewhere. When I adjust it either forward or backward and it can get into gear, it does just fine. It just can't get to the opposite one.

Is this something reasonably easy to adjust?

You have linkage and/or ball joints worn out. Also there is a couple of bolts under the cab securing the linkage that could be loose. Lastly, I suppose if the cab mounts were really junk, that could cause an issue, but the linkage comes first.

Do you access that through the floor of the cab? Looking at the books it looks that way but just haven't done it yet.

Above the batteries and inside the console, which means pulling the side off. One person sitting in the seat moving the lever slightly back and forth in neutral while the second person looks above the batteries to see where the slop is.

The shifting rod coming out of the transmission top cover has two ears that then bolt to another piece of linkage. The ear can break at the weld and cause sloppy engagement. When the ear breaks,it will act just like you describe. Pulling the floor out will easily let you see this.

Where the two 1/4 in bolts, bolts link to shift cover shaft, build a frame around shifter shaft to where the two 1/4" bolts have some support.
The two bolts work loose, then brakes linkage.     MACK

This was mostly my problem. All of the linkage was loose, however, the bracket with the two 1/4" bolts was cracked. I patched it back up and it works like a champ.

Really appreciate your guidance, as always.
