Howdy,
I'm brand new to this forum and relatively new to Allis-Chalmers. Last year I was able to procure a 1972/73 416S, along with a roto-tiller, mowing deck, moldboard/disc, box blade, push blade, broadcast spreader and small trailer, and all for about $1,500. I was thrilled to get this setup as I needed a mower and could use the roto-tiller to do some ground prep, the box blade to smooth out the driveway and the moldboard/disc to dig up some trenches. So up until about a week ago, she was doing great. Then, while mowing, she stopped dead: something broken or (a keyway?) became dislodged...something. Whatever the case, something was bouncing around in a transmission component and, well, that was that. Fixing her seems unlikely, given her age and scarcity of parts, not to mention someone rather local who knows how to work on her. So, I'm shopping for a replacement. I've found another 416S and a 410. I'd rather have the 416S if only because I'd then have two of them; could use one as a parts machine. Plus, I am familiar with the 416S and have a good idea of what she can and cannot do. But the 410 I found appears to be in excellent condition. Yes, it's priced higher than the 416S and is in better shape, but I don't know anything about the 410. As a result, I'm concerned that the 410 won't quite be up to the tasks here on the property. And I have my doubts that the 410 will work with all the implements I have. Would some kind soul educate me as to the differences between the 410 and 416S? Thank you very much. |

Link to 'Tractor Data' websites: 410 and 416 I don't think the 410 would be near the tractor as 416. Why not look for a used engine. Gary http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-tractors/000/1/4/140-allis-chalmers-410.html http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-tractors/000/1/4/141-allis-chalmers-416.html |

Thanks for the response.
I'm not sure a different engine would remedy the situation, as I think the problem is in the transmission. I'm new to this tractor thing and so I am relatively certain I don't have the skills and/or training to do a transmission swap. As it happens, I'm having a very difficult time getting the owners/sellers of the 410 and 416S I've found online to be responsive to my requests for more information. They're both very happy to have me come visit to check them out, but it's a bit of a drive for me. (People: can't live with 'em and can't shoot 'em.) In any event, I'd prefer to get a 416S, but someone else related to me that an engine swap (from my 416S) into the 410 is not a difficult job at all (maybe a couple of hours). But I have my doubts about putting a 16hp engine in a machine that is designed for an engine about half that size. (The transmission would be my concern.) Anyway, we'll see. Thanks again. |

I see you're in the Blue Ridge MTS so am I.I have several of those AC 400 series tractors
in various condition and some parts.Basically the 410 and the 416 are the same tractors just different engines BTW.Of course the Shuttle drive is different from the straight geared with no shuttle. |

The 400 series were all the same as in Shuttle, hydro or gear drive. If you have a 416 shuttle then it is the same shuttle transmission as a 410 . The 416 was either shuttle or hydro, 410 either 3speed gear or shuttle. either way the engines would swap around any way you would want then to, The only difference in going to a 10 hp would be mower deck size. If you are using a 48 inch then a 10 would be a little underpowered. 410 had a 42 inch , 414 and 416's could have either. Everything else as in tilling, pushing. trailering, a properly running 10 hp should do all that. With all this being said the 400 series is similar to a 300 series but there are differences, stay with 400s to be sure for parts swapping. I have several 10's as well as several 16.s and have never been concerned with power on any of them. Big difference for me is that kohler 16 is always louder through the original style exhaust than the 10's. Hope this helps

Dave,
A guy I know in Oklahoma who is a whiz with this stuff says that an engine swap, from my 416 to a 410, would be easy-peasy (about an hour or so). Your comment about the transmission was very reassuring, as this was the biggest concern for me. And although I'd like to get a replacement 416 (guess I'm just weird that way), I now know that going with a 410 isn't really an area of concern. So, thanks again. Awesome news. |
