Hello,
My father bought an Allis Chalmers BH 715.  We're not sure what year it is.  I guess the model/serial is 1021?  The engine code is 236U94380.   My first question is: How do we find out what year it is?
Now on to the distressing part.  It started running like crap and blowing a lot of smoke and the oil was really thin like it had diesel in it.  I pulled the head off and found that the second piston from the front had thrown and ring and it got all chopped and basically welded itself to the top of the piston.  Needless to say the cylinder sleeve wasn't in the best condition either.  Our plan was to pull the sleeve, replace that and the piston and rings etc that were damaged.  Amazingly the head and valves appear to be untouched.  After trying ourselves, and paying a professional, twice, to the amount of $400 we got the sleeve to come up about 1/2 an inch and "the professional" determined that it is stuck and we need to have a new engine put in it.  (The front of the tractor was off the ground trying to push the sleeve out, while "shocking" it.)  So, on to my questions:
Is getting the sleeve out and repairing this engine ourselves hopeless?
A friend says he has a guy that can rebuild the engine for $2,000.. does that sound like a good course of action?
Is there any other engines that would fit in this tractor that we can pick up for cheaper than $2,000?
Is it hard to find this engine for under $2,000?

We live in Southern Arizona.  Any help and especially information you guys can provide would be VERY appreciated! Thanks in Advance.

If I left out any need to know information.. please let me know.

We were thinking of trying to cut it out with an angle grinder.. That could get ugly in a hurry if we cut too deep.  Do you have any suggestions on what you mean by "breaking" it out?
We were told even still that the new sleeve would have to be bored which would involve pulling the engine and taking it to a shop to have it bored and honed anyway.. Anyone know anything about that?

It looks like it has the 236 Perkins engine in it....I wonder if you can press the sleeve back down and have it  bored out to a 248? I have a 236 and was thinking about doing that as mine has blowby issues....

715's have a Perkins 236 engine. This is a very common engine that powers alot of different brands of equipment. I beleive that this engine has dry sleeves. Anyone with Massey experience will have Perkins knowlege and should be able to help.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed
