I use a napa 1101 filter on mine, forget how many quarts of oil..

I sort of remember putting 6 quarts of oil into my D17 gas a few months ago after rebuilding the engine.  I remember buying 2 1-gallon containers, and the 2nd container was half full (or half empty) when the proper amount of oil was added.  Add oil to your filter to the point the oil isn't being absorbed by the filter media, and then spin it on.

It depends on what D17 you have. I do believe later models had full flow oil system and used a different filter.

Thanks for the replies.. I'll get 7 quarts (one extra in the garage) of 30w...
 
Ass for the oil filter.. it doesn't have any numbers and I haven't taken it off.. however.. please see the attached picture if you can identify..
